“The benefit of treating concurrent disorders at the same time is that it allows patients to better understand how their mental health and substance use intersect and influence each other. This concurrent approach is shown to improve patient outcomes, and gives patients a toolbox of coping strategies that best align with their needs.” When you have both a substance use problem and a mental health issue such as depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety, it is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. But fragmented and hard-to-access mental health care means that these conditions and addiction often go untreated. In some communities, it is easier to get illicit drugs than adequate mental health care, making co-occurring addiction and other mental illness more likely. People with a mental illness are twice as likely to have a substance use disorder compared to the general population. Why is it that there are still so few programs that tackle both mental health and substance use health issues? Individuals should not have to go to private treatment and pay $1,000 a day to receive what is considered to be the standard in concurrent disorder therapy. Integrating mental health treatment into addiction programs offers more comprehensive support, often helping to address the root causes of substance use and better supporting long-term recovery. At Coast Mental Health we recognize this. Our Rehabilitation and Recovery program offers mental health supports from counsellors and where appropriate psychiatrists, but it also integrates important programs like cognitive remediation (or Brain Training), a therapy focused on improving cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving. #mentalillness #concurrentdisorders #treatment #addiction #mentalhealth
