What an amazing event this week, hosted by Dori Wittman, co-chair of the North County Human Resource San Diego. Our panel moderator, Hema Crockett, co-founder of Gig Talent, asked the panelists to open our discussion on #WorkplaceIncivility by answering this question: “ If you could create a new workplace etiquette rule that everyone had to follow, what would it be, and why?” My response was this: encouraging people to lead with curiosity instead of assumptions.    Right now, there are any number of issues we are asked to consider and discuss that will have a profound impact on our society: politics, #DEI, wars. What we are experiencing and will continue to struggle with for the foreseeable future is what can be considered collectively as a “defining moment.” And we are collectively experiencing a point in our lives when we are urged to make a pivotal decision that has the potential to fundamentally change how we interact as a society.     My concern is that we fail to take a beat, collect ourselves, and prioritize understanding others first, rather than insisting on being understood. This is the 5th habit – seek first to understand, then to be understood -- from the classic book by Dr. Stephen R. Covey titled, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders.”    Workplace incivility can be addressed by understanding someone else’s perspective in a way that will result in civil discourse, with the option to disagree without being disagreeable. If you’re not quite sure how to go about this, I encourage you to join me for an insightful series of Real Conversation from the C-suite discussions with Ms. Terri D. In this episode of ¿Qué pasa, HSIs? we spotlight empirical research that is relevant to HSIs. Our guest, Rogelio Salazar, is a doctoral candidate in the Higher Education & Organizational Change program at UCLA's School of Education. Guided by critical frameworks and methodologies that center an intersectional lens in interrogating P-16 policy, their research demonstrates how policies, organizational processes, and practitioners can disrupt or exacerbate existing educational inequities. We talk about dual enrollment (DE) and state promise programs, and specifically the ways that racially minoritized students benefit from or are disadvantaged by these programs. We also discuss mentoring practices for Latine students in HSIs, guided by an article published in the Journal of the Alliance of HSI Educators. In 2020, College Futures Foundation launched a Policy and Advocacy Ecosystem (Policy Ecosystem) strategy intended to strengthen an ecosystem of grantee organizations working to improve equity in California’s higher education system and foster valuable connections among these organizations. Over the course of four years, the Policy Ecosystem brought 15 nonprofit organizations together to cultivate interactions, share learnings, and build collaborations that enhance their work. The Policy Ecosystem strategy, led by College Futures Director of Public Policy Ria Bhatt, aims to not only elevate the individual strategies of participating organizations, but also amplify their combined efforts. It prioritizes reducing silos within the higher education field and creating space for interactions that could lead to impactful collaborations. Beyond providing funding to each grantee, this multi-pronged strategy includes the following elements: quarterly convenings, enhanced one-on-one support, and converging pathways. Was great to help kick off the C3Converge conference put on by the Foundation for California Community Colleges and California Community Colleges. I've been thinking about how well (or not) higher education's mission aligns with society's need to accelerate climate action. Which begs the question, what is higher ed's mission? The first two missions are the ones everyone thinks about: formal education and research. The third mission - social contribution - is more recent, but I was really arguing for the fourth mission - co-creation - as the key to unlocking durable and equitable solutions. And since community colleges are so deeply embedded in their communities, I think they are particularly well-positioned to lead on "fourth mission" climate action. This helps them complement other institution types that may be strong in different areas (research universities doing technical research, for example). Slides are attached. One more reflection on the magic that was last Saturday's AI in Education workshop at Design Tech HS, San Mateo: Below is a picture of our gathering. What do you see? Educators collaborating to imagine the future that they hope and dream for students. "Artificial intelligence" isn't a fad or a one-trick pony that will go away. It's the result of decades of development along at least five different threads -- algorithms, computational power, networking, funding and our own social acceptance of interacting with machines. But the folks who will move it beyond "replacing" current work practices to something different are users -- in this context, educators -- and students -- who thoughtfully imagine what the future of learning should look like. Our Saturday workshop wasn't about tips & tricks. It was about asking these deep questions. And yes -- we should have students deeply involved. But every journey starts with a step. This was ours. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the day, notably Ken M., Nancy Magee, Morgan Vien, Kip Glazer, Erik Burmeister, the students who supported, and all the educators who spent their Saturday with us!
