Life in the FAST lane at Future Ops / AdMonsters #OpsNY with Addy Atienza and Rashaun Hall. TMB (Trusted Media Brands) is part of Fuse Media's Culture Collective, which features Black, Latino, LGBTQ, and other focused FAST channels. TMB brings everything from Fail Army programs to Family Handyman. There’s no Nielsen for FAST! No single source of truth for what is successful… But you can definitely tell from the platform (OEMs) what is NOT working. Samsung, LG, and Vizio are the big three, but you can make good revenue off of smaller players like Fubo. The platforms have a lot of power/control—you have to keep them as informed as possible. Good chance they will start acquiring many content channels. They’re also building their own content—FAST channels are running into “Hey, we’re not going to market your stuff cuz we have something just like it." They also want exclusive content, like Samsung with Conan O’Brien. Cross-channel PMPs is the next big frontier—blending audiences across the Culture Collective. But interesting—60% of the inventory right now is sold direct.

We face a lot of hurdles and rejection in the entertainment + brand partnerships industries. Last week at TikTok and Variety’s Culture Catalysts event, Reia Davidson shared a fascinating example about the resurgence of Natasha Bedingfield's song Unwritten on TikTok—echoed by some of the platform’s superstars and featuring incredible creative from the Sony Pictures Entertainment team for the hit film Anyone But You. Interesting to see that even mass-targeted AVOD/FAST leader Tubi sees "passionate fandoms" as one of its top three areas of audience growth: "The platform’s audience is currently widespread, but [Tubi CEO Anjali] Sud says there are three main pockets of interest where Tubi is seeing a lot of growth: 'younger audiences, more multicultural audiences, and then what I would call passionate fandoms, so communities that cluster around specific things'...'Our overall view is that we put the viewer at the center,' Sud adds. 'Whatever they are looking for, it's our job to bring it to them, whether that means we make it ourselves, we licence it, or we find a creative partnership that's on us to figure out, and we'll do anything we have to do to make that happen. Another interesting stat in today's inbox about music and event spending by U.S consumers. Worth the share... During the second quarter of 2024, Gen Z led all generations in their monthly concert spend with an average of $38 per month. This figure is 23% higher than the average U.S. music listener’s spend of $31. Q2 is also the first time Gen Z has reported spending the most on live music events in general in the history of Luminate Insights’ quarterly U.S. Music 360 consumer research report. Up until Q2 2024, the title of highest-spenders on overall live music events sat with Millennials. What’s driving this increase in spend? Throughout Q2 2024, Gen Z reported spending an average of $23 per month on festivals, which is a full $10 higher than the average listener’s $13. The second quarter typically marks the kick-off to festival season, and with a new school year right around the corner it remains to be seen if this trend will continue or if the torch has indeed been passed from Millennials to Gen Z.

"What a surprise!" Said no one ever... X has significantly fewer moderators than other social media platforms following its 2022 staff reduction. According to recent E.U. transparency reports, X has the worst moderation staff to users ratio, with 1 moderator for every 60,249 users. Even considering Meta's expansive user base, its ratio still surpasses X's. Despite pledges to address the issue, such as building a new moderation center in Texas, X's efforts remain under scrutiny. The disparity in moderation staff between X and other platforms underscores concerns about its ability to address harmful content adequately. Third-party reports suggest increased rule-breaking content on X, potentially indicating a weakness in its moderation approach. The Institute for Independent Journalists' layoffs survey results are now public and featured at Columbia Journalism Review. The highlights are: - Women, young journalists and people of color were disproportionately represented in the 176 responses received from journalists who experienced layoffs or buyouts since 2022 - Women represented 68% of survey respondents but only 46% of the journalism workforce - Journalists of color comprised 42% of survey respondents, while only being 17% of the labor force  - Journalists with less than three years in a job made up a majority of respondents (52%) as did those aged 26 to 45 (70%)

A really interesting perspective on TikTok and other social media. On the one hand they’ve made it easier to reach and build a fan base but is the paradox that it’s harder than ever for original art to cut through? Live undoubtedly trumps everything else when it comes to music and most other art forms. That’s why the current debate in the industry about both artist development and the grassroots is so important. Recently, Tubi had its most-watched month ever in May 2024, surpassing many of the big-name streamers in viewers. Tubi makes various audience niches feel as though the platform was created just for them by ensuring it's offering hundreds of titles in its most popular genres instead of the handful of shows or movies other services offer. YouTube is the only free ad-supported streaming platform with more viewers than Tubi. Third-quarter revenue for Tubi grew 22% year-over-year at a time when the advertising market was sluggish, according to Fox.
