Matt Schechter '05 is regional director of national accounts for NYC & Company, the destination marketing organization plus convention and visitors bureau for New York City’s five boroughs. “For those in event planning, relationships are more important now than ever,” he says. “Build relationships with colleagues, classmates, professors and the alumni base to put yourself in the best position for job opportunities. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is buttoned up because people are online now more than ever before. I also think that in the future technology may be a complement for the industry — there may be more simulcasting of conferences, for example.”
He suggests that alums look to tourism boards and convention and visitor bureaus as a resource. “Our site describes what we are doing for relief efforts, as well as which restaurants are doing delivery service, which is a great way to support the industry.”
According to Schechter, groups such as the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, the Professional Convention Management Association and Meeting Planners International are an excellent venue for webinars and online courses (some of which are currently offered for free), job postings, scholarships/financial assistance and career advice; there are often also individual chapters for each state or region. “MPI also partners with charities dedicated to hunger and homelessness,” he adds. “If you can help others in need during this time, business karma goes a long way.”

This month, we resume our ongoing eInterview series, something that has been a real joy to produce. The series has allowed me to get to know more of our members on a more personal basis. Although I see the interviewees at various NYSAE events, these eInterviews provide a glimpse into the career paths and stories of those who have participated.

When I first met Matt Schechter about 10 years ago at an NYSAE event, I was immediately impressed with his professionalism, positive attitude, and sheer spirit for the nonprofit sector. Whether it is volunteering for a committee, attending a seminar or participating in Meet NY, Matt is attentive, productive and probably one of the best listeners I have met in my professional career.

Without further ado, here is the eInterview:

Denman Wall: Matt, thanks so much for your time in participating in our InView Newsletter e-Interview. Our members each bring a wealth of experience and interesting stories about their career paths and we would like to share yours with them. First, tell our readers about what you’re up to these days.

Matt Schechter: I have been engaged with the New York City hospitality community in various capacities for more than 15 years. Beginning in May 2017, I took on the role of Regional Director, National Accounts, Northeast, Convention Sales at NYC & Company, the official destination marketing organization for the five boroughs. I simultaneously present substantial business opportunities to great product throughout the city—including hotels, venues, restaurants, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and more—while providing large groups with access to these partners, resulting in ease of booking.
