Healing People-Pleasing Tendencies: Surface Fixes vs. Core Healing Many of us grapple with the tendency to people-please, often masking it with quick fixes. But just like treating a surface wound with a band-aid, these temporary solutions don’t address the deeper issues. To truly overcome people-pleasing, we need to dig deep and heal from the core. Surface Fixes: Band-Aids for People-Pleasing When faced with people-pleasing behavior, the surface fix might look like setting boundaries or saying "no" more often. While these are important steps, they often act like band-aids—providing temporary relief but not addressing the underlying cause. We might find ourselves reverting to old habits under stress or pressure. Core Healing: Getting to the Root Cause People-pleasing usually stems from deeper issues, such as a need for approval, fear of rejection, or past experiences where we felt our worth was tied to making others happy. To truly heal, we need to understand and address these root causes. Example: Consider someone who constantly seeks approval at work, always saying "yes" to extra tasks to gain favor with colleagues and superiors. A surface fix might be to start declining extra work or to delegate tasks. However, if this person’s people-pleasing behavior is rooted in a childhood where love and approval were conditional, these surface fixes won't provide lasting change. To heal at the core, this person might need to explore their past, perhaps through therapy, to understand how their need for approval developed. They might work on building self-worth independent of others’ opinions, learning to value themselves for who they are rather than what they do for others. Key Takeaway: While it’s important to implement practical steps to curb people-pleasing, true healing requires us to address the deeper emotional wounds.
