“Until people understand what we do and what goes into it, the world will fail to value our work.” For quite some time now, I’ve been wrestling with the realities of our industry. People don’t know/understand what it is we do. Oftentimes, our work is reduced to production. “How fast can you make this?” As someone who works in the industry and who teaches, I find it extremely difficult to justify stressing to my students a very intentional design process, which requires research, ideating, and iterating— only for the reality of the work industry to throw all of that aside for the sake of “making things pretty”. I think one of the responsibilities that we have as designers is to educate the public on the importance of design and the realities of the work that we do. It is strategic, it is thoughtful, and it is purposeful. Two Great Charts that Go Great Together In this installment, two charts that illustrate the power of standing out. The first is the Von Restorff effect which shows that in a sea of sameness, incongruous elements are the most memorable ones. The second chart, from Peter Field, shows that a rational (i.e. boring) ad campaign costs considerably more than an emotional campaign to drive the same results. Together they make a strong case for creativity. At a time when advertisers are more risk-averse than ever, these two charts are a reminder that being different is actually the best way to play it safe.

👇 Latest poster design... and a little story... Illustration was my first love (and freelance job) out of school. I created a handful of editorial illustrations for the Dallas Morning News. I couldn't believe I got paid for thinking and drawing creatively. That was around 2000-01 (dating myself) right at the beginning of the major shift that the newspaper industry would endure and never recover from. There were no staff illustration jobs to be had anymore.... so I got jobs in web/graphic design and made a career out of it. But things have come full circle a bit. In today's internet/social media landscape "content is king"... and much of it is HIGHLY visual. And the need for quality illustration that is personal and hand-crafted is in high demand. So, I'm brushing up on my illustration skills (pun intended) .. and would love to create something for you. Where could custom illustrations work for you/your business? PMs, BizDev, and solopreneurs... consider adding those out of pocket line items for AI that don't naturally come for free. A question you may want to add to your list as you create your estimates would be: How many credits do we need per round of review? Another one may be: How many do we get if we go Enterprise rather than do it per seat, then again, check the credits per account, etc. This new world of AI is not cheap, no matter what the marketing materials say on TikTok.

Knowing who you are talking to allows you speak specifically. It's not whether it should be long-form or short-form, it's more about what's appropriate.
