Raising the bar for professional testers! So exciting. I hope that "Sting's" course or ones like it spread to every organization involved in flight testing that doesn't have formal flight tester training as part of their credentialing. The next question is, how can this academic training be integrated with airmanship experience for FTEs who are not aviators or need a deeper knowledge of their SUT. Flying, sims, and mixed-reality VR can all be part of this solution.

Well, now that the cat's out of the bag... In his keynote address at the Small Satellite Conference, 2024, the president of The Aerospace Corporation identified several novel and potentially important technological innovations we're delivering. I'm happy to say that two of these were my concepts, including the Fugacious Thrust Deflector, which allows a single rocket motor to produce a torque for spin stabilization before producing thrust. This will allow spacecraft operators to simply and quickly de-orbit their spacecraft at end-of-life. Another is Autodynamic Flex Circuit. Whereas flex circuits have been around for decades, this advancement allows them to move on their own, creating a new landscape of lightweight, low-cost spacecraft mechanisms and space robotics for servicing and debris mitigation missions as well as many we haven't even dreamed of yet. I'll be delivering the introductory talk on this new technology area tomorrow afternoon. More to come...

Talk about the control theory we learned in school. Did you know the old Harrier jet made the most of robust adaptive control theory of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems? Obviously we have improved from that from 40 yrs ago but take a look. Still an impressive BAE Systems and Boeing product. The Department of Defense is seeking efficient propulsion systems to enhance mission capability across commercial, civil and national security applications. Modern spacecraft use propulsion technologies that require finite liquid or gaseous chemical propellants. Since these propellants are limited, they are conserved for more critical applications such as station-keeping and collision avoidance. Proposed electrospray propulsion technologies should feature high specific impulse to enable a spacecraft to maneuver freely without the need to conserve fuel.

The U.S. Air Force’s Next-Generation Air Dominance program is currently under a comprehensive review to reassess the requirements of the 6th generation manned fighter in face of rising costs and rapid technological evolution.

Do you have an account at assist.dia.mil? If not, you should probably get one. You'll need to give them a brief explanation of why you're interested, but, well, you're reading this, aren't you? You're interested. It's a critical resource if you're even halfway interested in mil-stds specifically, or even just the history of specs in general. If you've known me for longer than 10 minutes, you'll know I've got a bit of both. Almost every day I look at a convoluted publication system and am subsequently almost crippled - like, physically stricken - by the singular question: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘌𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵? Sometimes, if I am very lucky and I have some time that evening, this can result in a James-Burke-like Connections[1] episode where I canter from post-WW2 pedagogical psychology, to the fraught missile systems before the Vietnam era, to IBM, then to Robert Horn, Information Mapping, and of course from there to DITA. Or the story of S1000D, which is such a complex web of transatlantic hissy fit, inter-agency brawling, microscopic risk tolerance, and downright fetishism (𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘮, for specific technologies, yes?), that it would completely blow out the miserly character limit in a LI post. Anyway, let's bring this back to assist.dia. https://assist.dla.mil/ And with it the impossibly vast panoply of mil-std, which lies alongside and intertwined with the many civilian and semi-civilian documentation specifications. I want to post some numbers without editorial, and you can think about them if you like. Full coordination specification (USAA, USN, USAAF): 7393 Limited coordination specification (USAA, USN, USAAF): 5669 In the new parlance, post-Perry, limcords are PRFs and DTLs. So that ratio - 1.3:1 - is pretty interesting. It'll probably get your hackles up regardless of which side of the fence you're on, the side of 1) people who think everything's gone all loosey goosey, or 2) people who feel absolutely strangled by the red tape and wonder how the armed forces is ever going to get the time to, you know, 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. They'll both get mad at 1.3:1. But here's the thing: it's a trick question. STD vs PRF vs DTL is not the root cause. Your problem is, rather, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦. You might notice a substantial difference in the job title of a spec writer circa 1977 compared to the job title of a spec writer of 2024 -not to mention the employer. That specific difference - not coordination, or PRF vs DTL - is root cause, the fact that people who steer "Thing A" do not know "Thing A", and possibly not "Thing, General". And all that signifies. [1] James Burke Connections. What do you mean you haven't seen it? Watch the first series at least. Yes, it's 1970s, but there's nothing not true in it, and Burke is a treasure. He's very British.
