This should be a great day spent with leaders in the transportation decarbonization space. The day before the summit, November 13, National Grid will file our ‘Urgent Projects’ Filing in the NY PSC’s Proactive Planning Proceeding. At this summit on November 14, I will describe our filing and projects. Our team spent years building a forecasting and project prioritization methodology that aligns the interests of ratepayers, developers, policy makers, and…maybe, dare I say, even naysayers. National Grid’s projects represent a watershed moment in utility planning: we seek to accommodate explosive load growth through area planning that’s comprehensive and coordinated. Today, let’s dive back into discussion on New York’s energy policy and touch on some positive news out of Albany, which is that the Affordable Gas Transition Act and the NY HEAT Act were not included in the final 2025 New York State budget that was passed on April 19. However, the legislative session will continue through June 6, and there is still work to be done. Your voice is more important now than ever, as Governor Hochul and Albany elected officials to continue to debate policies that could have a serious impact on how Western New Yorkers live, how our businesses operate, and the affordability and reliability of our energy sources. An article published this week by the Times Union discussed some of the items that didn’t make it into the budget but are expected to be debated on through the remainder of this legislative session, including the NY HEAT Act, which would get rid of the “100-foot rule,” limit utilities’ “obligation to serve” and provide the NY Public Service Commission (a state agency) the power to curtail portions of the gas system. As New Yorkers, particularly Western New Yorkers who endure regular chilling temperatures and substantial winter snowfall annually, we should continue to express our concerns to policymakers about the importance of energy affordability, choice, reliability and resiliency. Our State should be considering energy policies that balance these key elements while responsibly incorporating emissions reductions options. I really enjoyed chatting with Rebecca McManus and appearing on #EnergyUnplugged, discussing the crucial role networks play in achieving #netzero. ⚡ The importance of energy networks cannot be underestimated, they are the backbone of the UK’s energy system and play an integral part in decarbonising the country’s power system. During the discussion I focus on some of the key challenges we face as a sector, but also the huge opportunities available in achieving a clean, secure and affordable energy future - and I touch on some of these below. On #connections, we have made real progress in the last 5 years, and we’re well underway with the #GreatGridUpgrade, the biggest overhaul of the grid since its inception. 🔌 But there is still a lot of work to do, and we cannot afford to be complacent. We need to ensure the grid we are building today is fit for the future. The Government’s Strategic Spatial Energy Plan, setting out what needs to be built, where, and when, will be key to both meeting our climate targets and achieving longer-term connections reform. We need to continue to work closely with communities – we welcomed the government’s recent consultation on community benefits and want to see it implemented. We feel strongly that benefits should be bespoke, and tailored to, the communities they impact. We also know that to achieve net zero, hundreds of thousands of jobs need to be filled. This article discussion flies in the face of the market PJM has created. A market that only supports short term assets like wind and solar backed up by gas or batteries. In short it confirms the market flaws that have been claimed by utilities over many years, and should encourage support for creating market signals to create long lived assets like baseload generation plants.

As it reviews Duke Energy Corporation's proposed Carbon Plan, the North Carolina Utilities Commission has an electricity generation “hole” to fill on the state’s road to eliminating pollution. The question is: what should the hole be filled with?
