Citi leans on tech modernization to fix data quality management failings. The company invested more than $12 billion in technology last year. They say that they have reduced the time it takes to book loans, automated controls for their traders to reduce errors, moved risk and analytics to a cloud-based infrastructure and increased the resiliency of their platforms to reduce downtime. Citi spent about $3 billion last year on transformation related work and plan to increase that this year. #digital #banking  #technology

It is always interesting to see where Family office money is flowing. According to the latest report from Citi Private they are increasingly reducing their cash reserves and slightly increasing their allocations to hedge funds, especially global macro. So much for a quiet August.... volatility spiked as a weak US jobs report reignited the recession fears that have been on and off since the Federal Reserve (Fed) started aggressively raising rates a couple of years ago. Although subsequent positive data has reduced those near term fears, there are still high expectations for the Fed to begin a cutting cycle at their September meeting. With uncertainty around the speed and size of the easing, the market is hanging on every market event to get further clarity around the future path of interest rates. US Treasury yields had been climbing even prior to the election, as expectations of a Republican victory and firmer than expected data had removed some of the exuberance around Fed cuts that were priced during the summer. Yet with the market nearly evenly split on a further lowering of the policy rate in December, the upcoming November jobs and CPI reports could be the tipping factor in the Fed's decision. It seems to this observer that the actions or inactions of bank executives causes regulators to reassess the environmental risks on a real time basis. "OCC’s Hsu wants to label domestic systemically important banks The regulator spoke at length on the need for horizontal, risk-based supervision — and the equivalent of regular physical exercise." "U.S. banking agencies should consider a framework to designate certain banks as systemically important on a national scale, Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu said Tuesday at a conference in Germany. “While the post-2008 financial crisis reforms have significantly improved large bank resilience, resolvability and manageability, the risks of backsliding and stasis are increasing as memories of the financial crisis fade,” Hsu told the joint European Banking Authority and European Central Bank conference in Frankfurt. The Dodd-Frank Act and other measures have boosted the oversight of global systemically important banks, but regulators must ensure large non-GSIBs don’t fall through the cracks, Hsu said. “Given last spring’s banking turmoil and the projected growth of large banks … we must ensure that our supervision and regulation of non-GSIB large banks are not under-calibrated,” he said." #banks #regulation #keepingcurrentwithenvironmentalchanges

Banks and Incumbent FIs want to innovate at a faster pace; not only do they want to move faster, but they also want to do more innovation (across the business), wants higher RoI on their innovation initiatives and do it at a lower cost and risk. Skiptism runs supreme. Regulators have drummed for simplification of banks. This is clarion call seems to be cast aside by bank CEOs. Cap1 expects regulators to come down on Cap1's assertion that the deal improves competition. Ignoring the current regulatory concerns of unsafe and unsound business practices, rooted in banks cutting corners to save costs and settlings for passing compliance grades. Taxpayer bailouts are not in the offing, especially for cutrate business practice choices. Executives will have to emerge into C-Suites skilled at growing their business without M&A options. Perhaps this means burning the ol' playbook of cutting costs when earnings plans are missed. Finding a new tactic, perhaps restructuring executive compensation could be a new dawning. #banks #mergersandacquisitions #regulatoryactions

As a Juris Masters student at Florida State University College of Law we focus on various compliance areas, one being compliance failures. Today was a big one much like HSBC in 2012. Financial institutions must learn from TD Bank’s failures in compliance which has been highlighted in today’s 99 page FinCEN Consent Order release. Inadequate resources, weak governance, and poor transaction monitoring (SARs reporting) contributed to significant risks and ultimately regulatory penalties. To prevent future compliance lapses, financial organizations must: 1. Invest in AML resources and technology. 2. Strengthen governance to ensure proactive oversight. 3. Enhance transaction monitoring systems. 4. Improve customer due diligence and SARs reporting. 5.
