✍️🤓 Gvirsman, O. and Gordon, G., Effect of Social Robot's Role and Behavior on Parent-Toddler Interaction. In Proceedings of the 2024 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI '24). https://lnkd.in/dXswGjDK In this Honorable-mention HRI 2024 paper, we focused on how to involve parents in a triadic parent-toddler-robot interaction, where the goal is to promote better parent-toddler interaction by varying the robot's behaviors and roles. We thus developed two games, one with two levels of robot scaffolding, and another with either structured or unstructured design. We then explored, in two studies, how a social robot's assigned role and behaviors influence the engagement of parents and toddlers with the robot and their interaction with each other. Our results show that parents affectively scaffolded their children less when the robot increased its scaffolding behaviors and that parents provided more scaffolding in a structured game with the robot, whereas in an unstructured game the dyad exhibited more cooperation in which children exhibited more independence. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of interaction design, triadic dynamics, and the role of the robot in parent-toddler-robot scenario. Check out our latest paper, a collaboration between NYSBC scientists with scientists from #UniversityofMarylandStructuralBiologyInitiative and #CUNYAdvancedScienceResearchCenter. This paper presents a novel application of deuterium (2H) relaxation rate constants for CH2D methyl groups measured at proton (1H) frequencies 475, 700 and 950 MHz to efficiently characterize conformational dynamics in E. coli Ribonuclease H. The approach exploits a unique property of 2H relaxation at coupled resonance frequencies (475/950 MHz) to probe pico-to-nanosecond motions. These results suggest that other special combinations of magnetic fields may prove useful in elucidating dynamics on different timescales in biological macromolecules by NMR spectroscopy: https://lnkd.in/eznGVJek

🌱 Ecological forecasts can be used to predict changes in ecosystems and subsequent impacts on communities. In addition to long-term projections, there is an important need for forecasts in shorter-term decision-making time periods of weeks and months. 📊 Boston University College of Arts & Sciences's Michael Dietze and Hariri Institute for Computing, Boston University's Yannis Paschalidis, along with other scientists at the Ecological Forecasting Initiative, are working to advance the field. They are developing a process to continually update model predictions with new data, enhancing our ability to foresee future changes. 📢 Through a recently published Nature Portfolio Climate Change paper, these scientists are calling on greater investment in these efforts, asking the scientific community to collectively commit to building the capacity to improve the field while calling on world nations, major corporations, and NGOs to integrate ecological forecasting into their climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. #DidYouKnow For 60 years and counting, the University of Massachusetts Amherst has maintained a successful scholarly exchange program with the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany? The partnership, originally established in 1964 as a small student exchange program between UMass Amherst and the University of Freiburg, has grown over the years to include both students and faculty, and has expanded to all nine research universities in the German state and the campuses of UMass Boston, University of Massachusetts Lowell, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and UMass Chan Medical School. The long-standing and multilateral nature of the engagement between the UMass and Baden-Württemberg universities allows for the fostering of new collaborations and opens doors for researchers to access new funding opportunities. In honor of the 60th anniversary, UMass Amherst awarded researcher mobility grants for faculty members to travel to Baden-Württemberg and meet with current or potential collaborators. The 60th anniversary will be marked with three days of events in Baden-Württemberg next month. The success of this exchange is also a model for UMass Amherst's strategic international partnerships in other parts of the world, according to Kalpen Trivedi, vice provost for global affairs and director of the UMass Amherst International Programs Office. “It's part of our global strategy to find nodes around the world where we can build broad and deep partnerships with several different types of activities,” he says. A new #NYUTandon initiative aims to provide non-STEM professionals with fundamental semiconductor chip design skills, so they can pivot into key and emerging technological careers that help advance the objectives of the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act. "BASICS" (Bridge to Application Specific Integrated Circuits) — which the National Science Foundation (NSF) Foundation selected for its latest Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies (ExLENT) investment — provides a self-paced 28-week online course that imparts foundational chip-design knowledge, culminating with each trainee fabricating and testing their own chip. "With BASICS, we're welcoming a diverse group of professionals to learn chip design, which has long been restricted to a select group of computer engineering specialists," said Siddharth Garg, Institute Associate Professor at NYU Tandon and a member of BASICS executive committee.
