I have worked with all leading EMS partners and their biggest gripe is that designers don't bother testing upfront in the design and later the product manufacturing cost is high due to adding testing later. Delivering a quality new product from concept to market is a complex journey. Traveling down this path with several companies, dozens of teams and too many quality products to keep track of, I can say that each experience is unique, but generally the path looks similar. Concepts will go through iterative ideation changes for various reasons before there is a design freeze. Once engineering gets involved there may be many new changes that were not predicted to accommodate for raw material choices or production capabilities or limitations. After the product finally comes off the line and tested, most of time there are tweaks and changes that may lead all the way back up stream impacting budgets and timelines. I foster collaborative teams to hold meetings that should include SMEs of every impacted discipline along the path to share their knowledge in hopes of minimizing negative outcomes. 10 Bits of Hardware Advice from Michael Lo: • It can probably be solved with magnets. But there's usually less expensive solutions. • Don’t look down on your vendors, especially overseas. It will pay off in the long run. • Nylon can expand and weaken when exposed to water. • Elaborate design is alluring, but good design is simple. • Calipers are considered a weapon by the TSA. Don’t fly with them. • The quality of your manager is one of, if not the most important factor in your success and growth. • Making a useful product requirements document is really hard. It should inform almost all design decisions. • Know your reliability test plan early in the process, so you can design the product to survive it. • Users will abuse your products in ways you could never dream of. • There's downsides to every product development approach - fast & messy vs. diligent & thorough. ARM is planning to spin off a division focused on AI. This strategic move could allow ARM (Already dominant in the AI market especially on the edge) to leverage its corporate valuation of Arm cores in the AI segment. Interestingly, the hardware design blocks used in the development of AI chips are the same as those used in microcontrollers and microprocessors, but optimized for AI, especially on the edge. What conclusions can be drawn by vendors and customers in commercial sectors like PropTech for MDU and and HotelTech, when looking at the most recent example of a successful consumer product lifecycle ending abruptly? Probably many, but one for sure: commercial markets have and will always be of secondary importance to companies that make 95%+ of their business with consumers. And yet, vendors and customers continue to rely on them for their systems. It’s Monday, and my Monday Morning Message (MMM) is about the impact of the often overlooked, minor support issues and tickets. These are the paper cuts or broken windows of a product that can lead to customer dissatisfaction and churn, or just customer malaise. We all focus on the major coding errors and bugs, but often we ignore the daily insults of minor support inquiries. However, the difference between a delighted customer (NPS 9 or 10), and a satisfied customer (NPS 7 or 8), is often determined by the paper cuts. Sweat the small stuff. 🚀 AI Innovation: The Power of Specialized Chips As AI continues to evolve, cost and power efficiency are becoming critical factors. Two Harvard Dropouts are taking on the challenge and I see some potential... Their new Sohu Chip, with its task-specific design (ASIC), is challenging the dominance of GPUs like those from Nvidia. My Take: While GPUs provide the flexibility needed to define and prove out any use case, I feel ASICs like the Sohu Chip 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 offer cost-effective, power-efficient solutions for scaled targeted tasks and companies will start to target these specialized chipsets for processes that are standardized across industry verticals. This is not so different where we now have FPGA's being used for high-speed stock ticker analysis and FinTech applications, because they can do more than a traditional CPU.
