Dorothee’s human rights work is amazing in general, and inspires me greatly. I will share the case study in the first comment. With a vision to restore the value of Belize’s rainforests for Belizeans, Pa Hen; a notable Black land surveyor and town planner planted over 140,000 mahogany trees between the ages of 76 and 96. Twenty years later, with both financial and ecological risks to the land increasing, the plantation remains unfinished work. The project is exploring possible directions for both storytelling and impact. ​ ​​2. Feature Presentation: Farming While Black ​​In the new documentary film, Farming While Black (SXSW EDU), Leah Penniman, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. The Pact for the Future must establish robust and accountable follow-up mechanisms in order to effectively revitalize global governance. You may know that from high level conferences like the New York #HLPF. You worked hard over weeks to organize travels, concept notes, meetings and dinners. Then your guests arrived and you hosted them at conference sessions, workshops, bilateral meetings etc.. At nights you worked on presentations and draft decisions. On the last day and the closing sessions you give a farewell to your guests, have a final briefing and then you go with your team on one of the rooftop bars in New York and have a cold drink (in my case that's a beer). What a deserved pleasure. Unfortunately, among the docs published during this weeks High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is an open letter from over 50 international leaders, including former heads of state, ministers of government, and leaders of intergovernmental and civil society organization. It is addressed to Heads of State and Government, and United Nations Member States, emphasizing the critical need for effective and accountable follow-up measures to implement the proposed Pact for the Future. The letter is driven by their (and my) concern that the Pact for the Future is too week to generate meaningful impact bringing the 2030 Agenda and back on track. 🤔 If you think you’re immune to unconscious bias, think again because you’re the product of your environment. This month’s ReformWorks research spotlight was a deeply personal one, in that it forced me to reflect on institutional structures in the #UN that reinforced my own #unconsciousbias. Highly recommend new podcast "Whose planet?" from the fabulous Nani Jansen Reventlow and Systemic Justice. Episode one deals with clean air, and brings a racial justice analysis to air pollution and human rights in Europe, including the case of Ella Roberta Addoo Kissi Debrah, which Daphina Misiedjan, Ph.D. spoke about so powerfully at our conference last May. Pleased to highlight the important commitments made by G7 Leaders to advance women's economic security! They underscored the importance of strengthening the care economy as essential to enabling women's economic leadership, and set a target to track progress, "aim[ing] by 2035 to support 200 million more women to join the workforce by investing in efforts to close the global gap in the availability of childcare, including through the The World Bank Invest in Childcare Initiative." USAID helped launch the World Bank Invest in Childcare Initiative two years ago, with a commitment of $50 million over 5 years. This public-private partnership is showing immense impact. In partnership with other G7 nations, hopes are high that we will reach the historic target set last week.

As we continue to navigate global challenges, it’s critical that we support groundbreaking efforts like SolarFi’s to ensure that energy, technology, and essential services reach the furthest corners of our continent. In this regard, we are actively seeking to collaborate with more investors, donor organizations and international partners to scale these solutions and address these pressing challenges head-on. The work being done here represents not just progress, but a transformation in how we think about healthcare and agriculture in Africa. Together, we can build a future where innovation drives sustainable development and uplifts our communities in Ghana and across Africa.

With COP29 in Baku now underway, and delegates looking at how they can deliver the climate finance the world needs, I’m struck by the latest data that underscore both our progress and some of the perverse challenges ahead. Could we turn these into opportunities? That is the question. A few key numbers: Climate Policy Initiative’s latest report reveals that climate finance flows have nearly doubled since 2018, reaching almost USD 1.5 trillion annually. This milestone shows real progress in mobilizing resources to fund transformative climate solutions that benefit people and the planet. But, it’s impossible to ignore a stark and sobering comparison: We are spending almost the same amount—nearly USD 1.5 trillion annually—on fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks according to the OECD - OCDE and the International Energy Agency (IEA). These subsidies undermine the very climate goals we are striving to achieve. These numbers highlight an undeniable truth: while we are making strides in funding climate action, we are at the same time deeply perpetuating systems that lock us into an unsustainable future. At COP29, we need leaders from around the globe to push for bold decisions and transformative solutions. We have the resources to finance a just and sustainable future—it’s time to align our actions with our ambitions. Let’s ensure that every dollar invested moves us closer to a livable, equitable planet. #ClimateAction #COP29 #ClimateFinance #Sustainability

Two important things in the attached... One If you can, in November, Techonomy 24 is different, engaging and framed as Leading with Intelligence. It's a curated retreat, not a conference. The way private firms distribute the value they create has profound political and economic implications. When stakeholders feel they aren’t receiving their fair share—the root cause of inequality—they increasingly channel their frustration by voting for populist leaders (think Berlusconi, Boris Johnson, the Kirchners, or Maduro), who promise to stand up for them. However, groundbreaking research by Moritz Schularick, Manuel Funke, and Christoph Trebesch reveals the damaging impact of these leaders on both political stability and economic health. https://lnkd.in/eFRsGyAq Despite the hope of their supporters, these populist leaders often harm the very people who put them in power. The research shows that under their governance, economies tend to shrink, and inequality widens (see graphic). This is just one of many reasons why business leaders must prioritize addressing inequality. Expanding Connectivity: Insights from the Geneva Human Rights Platform Attending the 2024 Annual Conference of the Geneva Human Rights Platform at Maison de la Paix was an incredibly enlightening experience. The session, 'Human Rights System Under Pressure: A Reason to Expand Connectivity,' offered profound insights into the evolving challenges and opportunities in safeguarding human rights.  Listening to a distinguished panel of experts, including Prof. Philip Alston, Prof. Suerie Moon, and Prof. Jorge E. Viñuales, and moderated by Janet Anderson and Felix Kirchmeier, I gained a deeper understanding of how interconnected human rights are with critical policy areas such as global health, internet governance, new technologies, environmental issues, and climate change.  The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and expanding global connectivity to address the pressures facing human rights systems today. It was a privilege to engage with such brilliant minds and take back valuable perspectives on how these ideas influence global and local decision-making.  Events like these inspire me to reflect on the broader implications of human rights within industries and communities, reinforcing the belief that sustainable progress must be rooted in fairness, inclusivity, and shared responsibility.  #GenevaHumanRightsPlatform #HumanRights #GlobalConnectivity #Sustainability #LeadershipInsights

The Summit of the Future - Economic Inequality (3rd Challenge) Economic disparities have been exacerbated by the pandemic, with millions falling into poverty. The summit will focus on inclusive economic growth, fair trade practices, and strategies to reduce income inequality. Income Disparities: The top 1% globally owns 43% of the world’s wealth, while the bottom 50% owns only 1%​​. Pandemic Impact: COVID-19 pushed 97 million more people into poverty in 2020​​. Wage Gaps: In many countries, there is a significant wage gap between the highest and lowest earners. CEOs in certain major corporations can earn more than 300 times the average worker. Gender Pay Gap: Women globally earn approximately 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, contributing to gender-based economic inequality. Access to Education: Limited access to quality education perpetuates economic inequality. Healthcare Inequality: Lack of access to affordable healthcare services increases economic vulnerability. Housing Inequality: Rising housing costs disproportionately affect low-income households, leading to increased homelessness and housing insecurity. Digital Divide: The pandemic has highlighted the digital divide, with significant disparities in access to technology and the internet. Those without reliable internet access are at a disadvantage in terms of education, employment opportunities, and access to information. Regional Disparities: Economic inequality is often more pronounced in certain regions within countries. Rural areas, for example, frequently have higher poverty rates and fewer economic opportunities compared to urban centres. Social Mobility: Low levels of social mobility in many countries mean that people born into poverty are likely to remain poor, regardless of their talents or efforts. Read the article:

While the #G7 is wrapping up in Italy, the international community is gearing up to meet in🇳🇵next week to discuss key priorities for #IDA's crucial replenishment by the end of this year. Representatives from contributing and borrowing countries will meet for frank conversations on ways to make sure the world's single most important development finance facility is up for the job. Key issues include: 1️⃣ Balancing the need to sustain investment in people's health, education and social protection systems with the imperative of tackling global challenges 2️⃣ Revamp IDA's country engagement to address increasing fragility in many parts of the world 3️⃣ Provide financing at scale while supporting countries' capacities to raise domestic resources and manage resources sustainably Looking forward to be a part of Team 🇧🇪, which as President of the Council of the EU has played a crucial role in coordinating 🇪🇺 donors and beyond.
