What do you do if your digital strategy needs innovation but your budget and resources are limited?
I have always loved the model that I think was originally invented by Coca-Cola: The 70/20/10 = NOW/NEW/NEXT rule. Put 70% of your budget to NOW: the tried and tested, standard marketing executions that keep the lights on and the wheels of commerce moving. 20% of your budget should be applied to NEW: Marketing that you have tested successfully, or that has worked in another category but is new to the total system. Finally, allocate 10% of your budget to NEXT: Completely experimental marketing, innovation, and tests. If they fail, they failed on a small scale or part of the market. If they succeed they become part of the NEW allocation, while successful NEW concepts get bumped up to fully implemented NOW work.

What are the key elements of a successful brand positioning statement?
An important positioning check is to ask yourself "would a competitor or another company be able to do the opposite of this positioning statement?" This makes sure you are not using absolutes or obvious generic dimensions. So you avoid saying a service is "friendly and approachable" or a product is "competitively priced" because the opposite would not make sense. By contrast a service that is "low-touch, web-driven" or a product at the "luxury end of the price spectrum" establishes a legitimate place in the market.
