Today is #Juneteenth and I'm going to take this opportunity to surface an incredible Black-led organization 4Kira4Moms, Inc. and its founder Charles Johnson who is building a better, more equitable future for us all. Charles has dedicated his life to ending the maternal mortality crisis after losing his wife, Kira, during childbirth. For 8 years he has been a single parent, raising two young sons and doing the labor of this emotionally and physically taxing work. And he and 4Kira4Moms, Inc. need our help. I feel incredibly honored to collaborate with Charles regularly and to call him a friend. While you may know him and may benefit from the awareness he has created on this issue, what you may not see are the sacrifices he makes to do this work and the strength and stamina to keep going in the face of the challenge of building and scaling a non-profit organization. I am deeply saddened by the recent appeals judge ruling against the Atlanta-based Program for Women Business Owners. This program has been a lifeline for many Black women, providing crucial support and opportunities to thrive in their entrepreneurial journeys. Black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., with over 2.7 million businesses owned by Black women, yet they receive less than 1% of venture capital funding. This setback is a stark reminder of the unique challenges Black women still face in the business world. Now, more than ever, we must stand together and support each other. Let’s lift each other up by: - Supporting Black women-owned businesses with our purchases and recommendations. - Urging policymakers to support programs specifically designed for Black women entrepreneurs. - Offering mentorship and guidance to those affected by this ruling. Together, we can build a more inclusive and supportive business environment. I am super excited to share that our article, "Examining and Overcoming Barriers to Leadership for Black Women in HBCU Spaces," co-authored with my esteemed colleagues, has been published in the Advancing Women in Leadership Journal! Why Elevating the Black Woman Experience Matters in HBCUs: Black women in HBCUs are at the intersection of academic excellence, cultural identity, and resilience. Their experiences often go unrecognized, yet they contribute profoundly to shaping the HBCU community, leadership, and beyond. Elevating their stories and insights helps foster inclusive environments where every voice is valued and supported. Our research takes a close look at the unique barriers Black women encounter when pursuing leadership roles in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). From navigating microaggressions and limited mentorship access to balancing work-life demands, our study also highlights the empowering strategies Black women use, including mentorship and support networks, to overcome these challenges. CONNECTION. EMPATHY. IMPOSTER SYNDROME. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to gain today's insight—more than for myself, for my daughter. Today, she will gain a complete picture of her origin story—many generations before her arrival. "Why does it matter?" you may ask. While I'd love to share, there is far more to it than I'd include here, so look for a separate post from me shortly. However, to shed light on why it's important, please read the first three words beginning this post again. A deep sense of self drives input, access, and response to how one interacts with the cocktail of leadership that opens this passage. Leadership requires authenticity, grounded in self-awareness and an understanding of one's identity. For leaders - Black leaders - knowing our cultural and ancestral origins can instill pride, a deeper connection to community, and armor for times such as these. Succinctly, I think it enhances the ability to lead authentically. When leaders embrace their full heritage, they unlock the potential to lead with unparalleled authenticity, empathy, and impact. I know I am from a wondrous people. Today, thanks to Gina Paige and the fantastic people at African Ancestry, I will learn with greater clarity who and where my earliest ancestors originated. And a more marvelous gift, so will Daryl Wright, MPH.

Celebrating Juneteenth and the Importance of Allyship 🤝🌍 I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. 🎉🙌 Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the date when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. It signifies the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. 🗓️✊ As I reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, it is crucial to recognize the importance of being an ally in the fight against systemic racism and inequality. Allyship involves actively listening, supporting, act and advocating for marginalized communities, amplifying their voices, and working towards creating a more inclusive society. 🤝🌍 By educating ourselves about the history and experiences of marginalized communities, we can better understand the challenges they face and take meaningful action to promote equality. It is essential to listen, learn, act and engage in conversations that challenge our own biases and privilege. As we observe Juneteenth, let us commit to being allies and agents of change. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 💪🌈 I encourage you to take a moment to learn more about Juneteenth and its significance.
