My NEW research is on the brink of pioneering one of the most significant research studies in the field of education, focusing on the pivotal roles of Black Superintendents and their instrumental impact on dismantling systemic racism within our schools. This groundbreaking study, titled “The Unspoken Truth of the Black Superintendent in America: Examining the Impact Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism Efforts Have on the Lives of Black School Superintendents,” aims to shed light on the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of Black Superintendents in leading our educational institutions towards a more equitable and just future. A profile in courage (with due acknowledgment to JFK and his ghost writer). "In January 1902, Anna Julia Cooper, one of the most highly educated Black women in the country, was appointed the seventh principal of Northwest D.C.’s famed M Street High School, the first and most prestigious public high school for Black education. Black people from around the country aspired to send their children to M Street, and its roster of teachers and graduates read like a Who’s Who of Washington’s Black educational and cultural elite. Under Cooper’s leadership, M Street students won scholarships and gained admissions to top colleges and universities — including Harvard, Brown, Yale and Dartmouth. But just four years into Cooper’s tenure, days before the start of a new school year, the White director of Washington high schools persuaded the D.C. Board of Education not to reappoint M Street’s acclaimed principal. When Cooper arrived for the first day of school, the janitor barred her from entering the building. Police officers observed from across the street. They were ordered to arrest Cooper if they deemed she was creating a disturbance. With her students watching from the windows, Cooper — always a model of dignity and decorum — exited the school grounds. Cooper’s story, now largely forgotten, was part of a wider movement to control the direction of Black public education in the early 20th century. Then, like now, battles over education — and especially the question of who was permitted to lead elite institutions, training the next generation to excel — were proxies in the larger culture wars. Today, with female and minority leaders of universities facing resistance from people who assume they have not earned the right to hold their positions, Cooper’s story is an illuminating one. What happened to her illustrates not only how the tactics around removing such leaders have persisted for more than a century, but also what was at stake — and still is — in the battles over educational access and leadership." Representation matters! I have the privilege of serving as the advisor to Cleveland State University’s Black Student Union. This organization holds a special place in my heart because, during my undergraduate studies at CSU, I served as the President of this same organization. Affinity organizations, such as black student unions, are essential on campuses. They provide a sense of community and support for students who may feel isolated or marginalized. These organizations offer a space where students can connect with others who share similar experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Black student unions frequently advocate for the needs and concerns of black students on campus. They address important issues such as diversity, inclusion, racial equity, and social justice, and work to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for black students. These unions often organize events, discussions, and educational programs that celebrate black culture, history, and achievements. These activities can help raise awareness and promote an understanding of the experiences and contributions of black individuals and communities. Black student unions can provide opportunities for leadership development, mentorship, and networking, which can be particularly important for black students navigating a predominantly white academic and professional environment. Overall, black student unions play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging, addressing systemic issues, and empowering black students to thrive academically, socially, and personally on campuses. #IamaproductofaBlackStudentUnionsupport

Had a Geat Time Being One of the Facilitators for the Lunch and Learn at University of South Florida, Tampa. Topic was, "How Black Students and Florida Benefit From College Attendance" I talked about the Three Rs that Black Students need at PWIs. 1. Representation - Does the Administation, Faculty, and Staff "Represent" and Reflect the schools black population? 2. Relatabiliy - Does the Administation, Faculty, and Staff "Relate" to the black population at the school? 3. Reliability - Is the Administation, Faculty, and Staff "Reliable", where the black population Trust them? We had a great open conversation and hopefully can create ways to make sure our black students feel, Represented, we can Relate to them, and they feel they can Rely and Trust us. Representation + Relatabiliy + Reliability = Retention and Graduation.
