For at least the past ten years in senior living, I have heard the same self-diagnosis: “we need to tell a better story of our industry.” Here’s what’s wrong with that; what’s missing. All that most companies have ever attempted to do with storytelling is to make more creative or bolder claims. The adjective wars have also made most senior living communities looks and sound exactly the same in most marketing copy. —> Can you tell me who I’m referring to when I say, “the most exceptional community for purpose-filled seniors supported by our caring and compassionate team!”? That is NOT the key to better storytelling, and it’s not the most effective way of thinking of marketing. “When you are good at something, you tell others. When you are great at something, others tell your story.”** [Edit: the "quote" above** is adapted from a quote I recently saw from football legend, Walter Payton.] Most organizations don’t have better stories to tell, because they’re only ever making claims. If you’re selling lemons, no amount of “creative marketing” is going to convince customers to buy more lemonade. Customers tell your story. Companies can either make claims or provide proof. The ONLY way they’ll tell your story well is if you deliver on your promise. The ONLY way to know what to promise (and work on) is if you understand what problems they are trying to solve in the first place. Too many people in senior living marketing misunderstand “tell a better story.” A more accurate way to say it is “create a business that follows through on the RIGHT promises where your customers are compelled to tell their own story with you as an important character.” Word of mouth isn’t about you. It’s actually about their own stories. They don’t say “James created a beautiful memory care community.” They say, “WE found the most wonderful place for dad. It’s called Bella Groves.” They don’t say, “Bella Groves is an employer of choice.” Employees say, “I made a good career decision by working for a place like Bella Groves.” They don’t say, “Bella Groves is a great place for volunteers.” They say, “I love showing my kids what it’s like to volunteer, and we make a difference at a place called Bella Groves.” See the differences? The primary character is THEM. Don’t limit your thinking by staying stuck to a literal interpretation of telling a better story. Focus on helping them to tell theirs.
