Women hold just 26% of data and AI-centered jobs, with a significant gender gap at the executive level. This is a troubling statistic considering the rapid growth of #artificialintelligence, its pervasiveness, and the threat of data bias. State of play: A recent Memo report found that 56% of CCOs are reporting to the CEO — an increase of 34 percentage points since last year. I loved seeing insights like that in Eleanor Hawkins's Axios Communicators Newsletter this week. It's a topic that is becoming increasingly important as the look of C-Suites continues to change each year. A separate report by the Observatory of Corporate Reputation found that CCO+ roles have increased by roughly 88% within the Fortune 1000 since 2019, outnumbering traditional CCO roles for the first time. I have been a long-time advocate of the CCO reporting to the CEO, indicating the importance of the role as well as its differentiating the position from the CMO which is complimentary but has a different lens to the brand. Amazing week at Brandweek last week- Spending time with fellow marketers reminded me why I love media, experiences and brands so much. Had a fun chat with Nicole Parlapiano and Adam Grossman (and thank you Mark Stenberg!) about changes in the TV landscape- how/when fans view, how TV lives beyond the screen and what makes for an authentic and compelling ad experience in this new fragmented world. Key takeaways: being a TV fan today is both amazing and a lot of work. There are more opportunities to reach fans than ever before but it takes a lot more insight and planning to get it right. Attended the Marketing Vanguard dinner at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's school and "lab" where we experienced his creative genius and how he thought about the fit of environment + structure + human was inspiring. Key Takeaway: the details matter- if you want your guests to sit, relax and get to know each other, keep the ceilings low! And learned more about the journeys of heritage brands including Crayola, Hilton and Wendy's (with amazing CMOs Victoria B. Lozano, Mark Weinstein, Lindsay Radkoski), all of which have become so much more than a product. They're experience brands with loyal fans for whom these brands are part of their identities (I pulled my Wendy's booklet out of my wallet as Lindsay was speaking, a roadtrip isn't a roadtrip without a stop at Wendy's for my family!) Key Takeaway: Brands that focus on who their fans are and what they care about beyond a transactional moment will thrive for (hundreds of) years! Our CEO/founder Jennifer Cloer interviewed Women to Women Network founder Liz Hatcher about how the group stands apart from similar organizations. It's incredibly timely given the recent closures of some women in tech and business groups. What Jennifer found so compelling about Liz and her work is the intimacy she's able to tap into, creating a pretty special experience for her members. Jennifer writes: "I’ve found intimacy among women in a variety of places and moments. It’s not always about a regular group of friends, a weekly work meetup or an annual industry event; sometimes, it’s the coffee meetup where someone shares that they’re suffering from grief and are concerned they won’t be able to keep their business afloat, or someone tells a story about being sexually harassed at work and having to leave that job. Sometimes it’s a moment, an opening, where you see someone and they see you." So many of my former peers and colleagues are heading to Cannes this week, and I hope that they will take the time to read this, and discuss it. As a former agency leader, this is an issue that has increasingly unnerved me for years. I avoided speaking up about it because, frankly, I was afraid of how much connective tissue (and revenue) my agencies had with social media platforms. I know I'm not alone in this. But as a parent, I can't keep how I feel about this to myself anymore. It is massively, massively important that we hold social media platforms accountable for the unparalleled influence they have over the fabric of our society and our mental health. The degree to which they operate unchecked in the face of all the things we know to be true is just completely irresponsible. The data is overwhelming- and overwhelmingly clear. For all the good these platforms make possible, there is a very unhealthy and corrosive underbelly that needs to be addressed and reined in. This is an issue where marketers, advertisers and media professionals should use their influence, experience and insight to help neutralize a very serious and tangible problem that is directly tied into what we do. Even requiring every platform to publicly publish their behavioral science data and insights would go an enormous way, as the Surgeon General suggests. People deserve the transparency of understanding the degree to which this tech is engineered to affect their behavior, and to play to and capitalize on their emotions. #socialmedia #cannes #creativity #tech #mentalhealth #advertising #marketing

Too often, these conversations miss what's important for brands when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion. DEI is important for identifying with your customers; the majority of people are not being targeted. In this case, it's not even about what's "right," it's about what's good for business. Reaching specific people through targeting is essential for positive business outcomes. Unfortunately, marketing is still a place where you walk into a room where a conversation is being had between people who have no sense talking about what they’re talking about. For example, it's commonplace to see men talking about women’s beauty, non-vets talking about military service, and the like. Despite all of the tech we have, why are we still struggling to get the right people in the room? These are big questions we need to start addressing if we want to make meaningful progress. A lot of this backlash is driven by misunderstanding and outrage based on pretenses, and it hurts the bottom line of these firms. #AdTech #DEI #Leadership

They favor a balanced approach to value that includes financial and other sustainability/DEI/CSR benefits. They engage in more participatory decision-making, seek a common co-created cause with vendors, and expect seamless buying through self-service.
