The Low Carbon Fuel Standard or LCFS has been a critical enabler for the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) transition, and the revisions being considered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will help enable the ZEV transition for drayage truck fleets and other heavy-duty fleets. This type of market-based policy helps enable the economics necessary to fuel the zero-emission vehicle transition that is so critical to achieving California’s and society’s climate goals. More and more electric trucks are hitting California's roads 🔋 🚛 Congratulations to Volvo Trucks North America on adding another 70 vehicles to fleets across SoCal this week. The trucks will be used for regional drayage and are funded in part by the SWITCH-ON initiative, which is backed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contributed $21.5 million to the latest additions. Among the fleets that will benefit from the program are CEVA Logistics, Performance Team, and NFI. California's long-term EV plans call for all passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, while medium- and heavy-duty vehicles have a deadline of 2045 to reach that goal. As more HDEVs are added to the state's roads, getting high-power charging into existing depots, hubs, and commercial fueling properties is the next big challenge. RMI, Mission Possible Partnership, and the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) are hosting a webinar today at 10am PT on 'Providing Truck Charging Solutions in Southern California'. Over 1.8 million trucks are on the road in California each day. Most of these still run on diesel fuel, bringing harmful air pollution and carbon emissions into neighbouring communities. Starting this year, under California’s Advanced Clean Fleets Rule, fleets must buy only zero-emissions drayage trucks, and all drayage trucks must be zero-emissions vehicles by 2035. Overall, this regulation will lead to 70 percent of heavy-duty trucks on California roadways being zero emissions by 2042. Providing sufficient charging infrastructure in the right locations is essential to enabling this transition. Californian drivers appear to be losing some enthusiasm for Tesla. A California Auto Outlook report shows year-over-year Tesla registrations are down again in the state. The report, published on Monday by the California New Car Dealers Association, summarizes first-quarter vehicle registration figures statewide. The report said Tesla saw a 7.8% dip in sales in California in the first quarter, down from 54,265 in the last quarter of 2023 to 50,025 in Q1. The drop follows last quarter's 9.8% decline. Distracted driving remains a pressing issue on America’s roads, with staggering statistics reflecting its toll. In 2015 alone, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported 391,000 injuries and 3,477 fatalities attributed to distracted driving. Despite increased awareness and education, these numbers continue to rise. For employers and fleet managers, distracted driving extends beyond the concerns of damage to people and vehicles. The cost of distracted driving crashes can take a heavy toll on a company, particularly when it comes to the employer’s financial liability. If an employee crashes while driving a company vehicle, the employer is the one who is ultimately held responsible — and the cost can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars per incident. While implementing a distracted driving policy is a smart idea, it’s only the beginning. Making sure the policy is followed and that you provide education and monitoring is essential. Your policy is only as effective as it is enforced. If you have a distracted driving policy in place, make sure that you’re getting the most out of that policy.
