The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. It's not exactly breaking news that building new DC fast charging stations for EVs with money from the 2021 federal infrastructure law got off to a slow start, but now momentum is building and some states are even on a second round of bidding. Here in Massachusetts, the state is using a two-step process, first pre-qualifying a handful of companies, signing contracts, and then moving to site selection and development. States like Maine, Ohio, and Pennsylvania moved a lot quicker by just picking a bunch of sites and putting them up for bid. Which approach do you think works better? Potential For Charging Station Deficiency Under EPA Electric Vehicle (EV) Expansion Program: While Current EV Charging Capacity Is Adequate for the Existing Fleet, Future Demands on EV Charging Could Portend Extreme Wait Times If Charging Capacity Lags The recent EPA rule announced by the Biden administration to reduce Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) CO2 emission standards to half their current level by 2032 will force car manufacturers to produce more electric vehicles (EVs) as part of their fleet in the coming model years. At present, the United States has around 7,700 fast charging stations, each with about five DC fast charging ports. These stations are typically located around highways for easy access during cross-country travel. This number of fast charging ports is sufficient to support the limited number of EVs in the 2024 automotive fleet (currently around 1%). But it will quickly become overwhelmed under the EPA rules growth targets. By 2032, when new EVs will outnumber new ICEVs offered to the fleet, wait times will approach one hour if no further charging stations are built. This breaking point occurs when EVs reach 10% of the total operating automotive fleet. EPRINC's forthcoming analysis shows that to keep wait times under one hour, the average utilization of America’s charging infrastructure must remain under 70%: there must be an average of at least 30% of all charging ports free for use at any given time. Above this utilization figure, wait queues for stations begin piling up exponentially, as Americans would frequently have to endure lines of several cars, each taking half an hour to charge, before they could access the charging station. Furthermore, in order to prevent the over-utilization of charging infrastructure and exponential wait times, EPRINC's analysis shows that a total of 169,000 new DC fast charging ports will need to be built by 2050 at EV growth rates consistent with EPA targets. This is around five times the current number. Fast chargers are expensive to install, around $20,000 minimum per charging port, and hence the total cost of these installations required by 2050 will exceed $3.4 billion. At present, it is unclear how much of this will be government funding versus private investment.  In addition, projected average wait time is not indicative of variance.  Depending on the severity, American drivers might find it unacceptable to have low-probability events that generate highly inconvenient wait times even if the average wait time is low. Another great report from Rebecca Brewster and the good people at ATRI. I know several fleets that run renewable diesel and they love it. It makes a lot of sense for a lot of fleets in ways that battery electric never will. A recent study by iSeeCars analyzes the best and worst locations to drive an electric vehicle in the United States. Here are some of their takeaways: 👍 Most EV-friendly city: San Francisco, CA 🔋 Most EV-friendly state: Vermont 📶 EV charging infrastructure grew by 24% in 2023 👎 Least EV-friendly city: Milwaukee, WI 🚨 Least EV-friendly state: Mississippi ✅ Connecticut wins the award for improvements, both at the state and municipal levels, with Hartford, CT the most improved city for EV charging. Although individual data points can be contested, the overall picture of fragmented EV infrastructure development that characterized 2023 appears to hold true.
