Transitioning to a new country or jurisdiction throws up challenges for investment bankers to be successful! Piers Ronan, Managing Director, and Head of DCM Syndicate at Truist Securities in New York knows this better than most having moved to New York after 16 successful years building his career in London. I learnt from Piers that you need to develop relevant memory; he explained it as a synthetic memory 🧠 . He shared when you show up cold in a new jurisdiction or a new market, and you don't know any of the history of what has happened to the clients, how those companies have been formed, the deals that they've done, then you don't really have the context to cover those clients and to do business in that jurisdiction or that industry. So, you need to read a lot about what has happened in the past and internalize that, as well ask questions and be curious. Creating this ‘synthetic memory’ is critical to be successful in the new market. In addition to building memories, building a new network rapidly is critical. This month marks the 17th anniversary of our John Hancock MLK Scholars Program, and we’re excited to welcome another outstanding group of 22 young Boston-area adults into the program. Participants, 16-18 years old, will spend their summer with us tackling meaningful job experiences right here in our corporate offices and in other community-based organizations in the city.    Since its inception in 2008, our MLK Scholars Program has invested more than $16 million to provide 6,000 young adults with meaningful job experiences. One of the primary goals of the program is to level the playing field for young people who don’t have equal access to the work experiences and networks that are key to building long-term skills, self-confidence, and financial empowerment.    The program provides guidance on career readiness and financial literacy to help participants grow as leaders in the office, the classroom, and the greater community. The program also benefits local nonprofit organizations that employ MLK Scholars, providing them with an opportunity to engage Boston’s diverse student population in potential career paths in their industries – with some students even returning as college interns and full-time hires after college.    As we welcome another group of outstanding students this year, I can’t help but think of a quote from our program’s namesake, who once said, “the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”    I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Yesterday, all across BNY, we celebrated a tremendous milestone unique to our firm - 240 years (only eight years younger than America)! In case you didn’t know, the Bank of New York: - was established to help NY get back on its feet after being decimated during the revolution - loaned $200K to the country in 1787, not only saving it from bankruptcy but sparking an economic boom that helped transform its financial standing in the world - was the 1st company listed on the NYSE - was founded by two great men who were patriots and pioneers that both served as Treasury Secretary: Alexander Hamilton, founding father who revolutionized the nation’s financial system, and Andrew Mellon, who pioneered venture capitalism and backed many industries that helped propel the country to where it is today - as early as 1884, had women make up ~40% of its stockholders - served as the depository for what’s known to be the nation’s 1st trust, established for the benefit of Hamilton’s family after his death. We are privileged to oversee almost $50T in assets (including the top firms in the world as well as the US government), a feat achieved by staying true to our legacy of conservative financial management while constantly evolving and innovating to best serve our clients’ needs. Both thought leadership and action are important parts of our approach to sustainability. Illustrating some concepts from our Methane and Carbon Market Principles papers is our funding of a ClimateWells Pilot Project that enables the remediation and retirement of wells in the Wilmington community of Los Angeles. Innovative projects like this can generate economic value for reducing methane and CO2 emissions and create a range of potential environmental, social and economic benefits.
