Props to our excellent research team, Bryan, Javier & Hannah for this work. 🌊Tourism is widely supported across the state for its economic and cultural benefits, but concerns are rising about its environmental and social impacts, specially on the Oregon Coast and in Central Oregon. 🌲Three in four residents in the tourism workforce are satisfied with their life in Oregon; two-thirds agree that their life in Oregon is close to ideal (67%), and nearly as many agree that the conditions of their life in Oregon are excellent (62%). 🍇 The majority of the state’s tourism workforce identifies with being an Oregonian (81%), feels a personal responsibility to represent Oregon well (77%), and are proud to live in Oregon (73%) 💵 38% of current tourism employees and business owners reporting high satisfaction with their jobs, while 47% have moderate satisfaction. The majority work full-time year-round, primarily in professional services, restaurants, retail, and attractions.

I chatted with Josiah Mackenzie earlier today, and he posed a question. "Why do you love promoting San Francisco?" While I've been asked this question countless times, Josiah's inquiry made me reflect in a new light. Here's what I realized: I've always had an innate curiosity, the kind that drives me to seek out new experiences and share them with others. Whether discovering an exciting event, trying out a new restaurant, or exploring a new exhibition, I've always been the friend, rallying people together to create lasting memories. In marketing San Francisco, I get to channel this curiosity every day. San Francisco, with its ever-changing landscape and vibrant energy, offers endless opportunities for discovery. There's always something happening, something worth exploring. I get to be that friend who's looking for something cool to do every day, and it's such a privilege to do what we do. I imagine other destination marketers feel the same way. We work in such a special industry. This story has been the buzz of the U.S. tourism sector since it published a week ago, and one big feedback we got was it needed more context around the role of DMO CEOs and the size of the organizations they run. So we added the size of the org, in terms of revenue numbers and staff size, the story is updated now and adds an appreciation of the size of tourism economies in the states and cities in U.S., with revenues they bring in as a proxy to that. If you want to move up from a social media manager to a vice president, remember this one thing. It's a Marathon, not a sprint. Running a half-marathon and building a career share a common DNA. (I've run two of them—even traveling to Staten Island for one of them, but I digress) Both require patience, persistence, and a meticulous long-term plan. 1. Lacing Up: Just as you need the right gear to run a race, you need relevant skills and knowledge to kickstart your career. 2. Training: Continuous learning is the equivalent of daily training. The more you invest in acquiring new skills, the stronger you become. 3. Overcoming Challenges: Just as a runner encounters hurdles, so does one's career. Removing distractions and maintaining focus is key to long-term success. 4. Encouragement: Seeking mentorship and guidance is like having a crowd cheering you on. Both fuel your journey towards the finish line. 5. Patience: You can't run a marathon in an hour. Similarly, you can't transition from a social media manager to V.P. of Global Marketing overnight. Patience is a virtue. Just like running, your career path is a long and winding course, not a sprint. Embrace the journey, take each step with determination, and success will follow.
