Learning analytical skills is lot like beginning to exercise. You know it’s good for you, and you have the best of intentions! But you’re a little intimidated by it, you don’t have a lot of extra time and you’re not sure you are really committed to doing the work. After all, you are getting along without it – right? Usually, we don’t think our skills need improvement until… …we are suddenly hit with a request from our superiors or assigned a new project or our scope of responsibility grows. When that happens, we can feel overwhelmed and unable to choose a path forward because there is so much to do. We struggle to clarify what to do first – and how to do it. Maybe we are unsure what needs to be fixed – so we interview all the staff and sample managers and employees to gain insight into the issues we are tasked to solve. We start to gain insight, but yet – we are still unsure how to actually define and “start” the project.’’ And we only have subjective information at this point – no data to prove or disprove theories. Or maybe it’s one of my favorite challenges – you are the new HR Manager or VP/HR or HR Director. You are trying to gain as much information as you can about budgets and operations and challenges. But your spidey sense is telling you that you aren’t getting the full story from your staff and stakeholders. You don’t want to alienate anyone, but you have to figure out how to separate hearsay from reality. About this time, you are wishing you had started the process of upskilling your analytical skills. It might have been intimidating and it might have been a little work in the beginning to adjust and integrate your new skills. But now, you could really use the help! The thing is – we all know the above scenarios are coming. It’s just a matter of time. So if the above challenges are almost guaranteed in one form or another, but we don’t put the work into upskilling, aren’t we choosing to just “wing it?” Don’t miss a great article coming out on Friday – “Is HR Psychology or Analysis?” – only on Substack😊 https://lnkd.in/gbTmm65x or visit my profile to link to HRPMO University! #hrstrategies #hrstrategy #humancapitalmanagement #hr #humanresources #leadership #leadershipskills #leadershipdevelopment #projectmanagement #HRIS #projectmanager #economy #operations #criticalthinking #upskilling

Great webinar last week sponsored by UKG and Fortune magazine that featured three CEOs of organizations ranked as “Best Companies to Work For” by Fortune. These rankings are based on the UKG Great Place to Work (GPTW) “trust index“ employee survey. The webinar also included Michael Bush, the GPTW CEO and was moderated by Alan Murray, Fortune’s CEO. Even though these are private sector CEOs, there is a lot to learn from these organizations that applies to all sectors. I was especially struck by the comments of Ed Bastian, the Delta CEO. I fly Delta a lot and I trust the airline to keep me safe and treat me well. Several years ago, I heard Bastian say that he believes his number one job as Delta’s CEO is to “take care of our people.” In my speaking about how to become a great place to work, I often quote him, and I was happy to hear him emphasize this commitment again in this webinar. Next time you board a Delta airplane, look at the fuselage and you’ll see placards proudly proclaiming that Delta has been designated as a best place to work by about a dozen separate organizations, including Great Place to Work. I’m confident that this achievement is driven by a #CEO who believes that his number one job is to take care of Delta’s #employees – all 100,000 of them. Organizations that have #leaders, including in #government, who believe their job is to take care of their people will be employers of choice that attract and retain #talent. Bastian also said that in order to compete for talent, Delta has eliminated college degree requirements for almost all jobs. They assess candidates for skills and not just paper qualifications. The comments from the GPTW CEO, Michael Bush, are also relevant to government. GPTW strives to create great places to work for all. In #publicsector organizations, which are often the most diversified employers occupationally, it is critical that all employees, including the #frontline people who deliver essential public services, feel valued and trusted. It was clear that all of the webinar participants are sincerely committed to the #wellbeing of their employees – that’s why they are best places to work. https://lnkd.in/gHim6Zjp Carol Lawrie-Ballou Beatriz Mitchell UKG Great Place To Work US Delta Air Lines Fortune Patrick Bennett Bryan Peck Lisa Juley Dr. Jarik Conrad Linda Misegadis, CPP, CPM, CCM, IPMA-CP National League of Cities PSHRA NASPE Karla Wilkins ICMA - International City/County Management Association NASPE Blair Corcoran de Castillo Andrea Velez-Greene

A picture is worth a thousand words. Incorporating visual storytelling into your HR practices can significantly improve recruitment and retention. For example, visually engaging job postings, onboarding materials, and internal communications help attract the right talent and foster a stronger connection within your team. This is why upgrading your team's digital skills can support HR efforts. It's easy to focus on the front-end success of your staffing agency - securing placements, winning clients, and expanding your market. But when your agency crosses state borders, things get a lot more complex. Each state is like its own country when it comes to employment laws, licenses, and worker expectations. Wage and hour laws can vary significantly, for example: 1. California has strict pay transparency rules, while Texas has none. 2. California and Nevada have daily overtime, but not in other states. 3. Some states use the federal minimum wage, while others have much higher local rates. Make sure you understand the laws of each state where your agency operates to ensure smooth operations and legal compliance. Gain a better understanding of the risks and top tips on how to stay compliant in our full article here: https://lnkd.in/egahRVfR #StaffingAgency #EmploymentLaw #BusinessGrowth #StaffingIndustry

Recently, SHRM removed “Equity” from their DEI statement. This generated a lot of buzz, both negative and positive. There were arguments in comment threads. Many people threatening to cancel their memberships. Others dismissing genuine concerns. I immediately took away two things from this: — I'm grateful that we can have these conversations out in the open — No system is perfect, but for every given problem, there is a solution There’s no cheat code for how to conduct difficult discussions. But some ways are better than others. 👎 Ineffective ways: —Politicizing issues instead of infusing more humanity into them —Leaving little room for your mind to be changed —Writing off anyone with a differing opinion 😃 Effective ways (that will get you closer to a solution): —Conducting a discourse with thoughtfulness and generosity > self-righteousness —Recognizing that everyone has differing needs —Deprioritizing being “right” You will inevitably hear these topics arise in the workplace. If you want to get ahead of how to address them… Learn from the most prominent voices in HR. On August 15th, we’re talking with Alex Seiler, Tracie Sponenberg, and Morgan Williams — And they know a thing or two about how to manage divisive discussions, and end up at cohesion instead of discord. They’ll touch upon: - Balancing free expression with workplace harmony - Creating policies that don’t alienate people - Leveraging political diversity as a strength And yes—they’re giving us their two cents on the SHRM controversy. Are external change drivers a threat or an opportunity for your company and its employees? Who is involved in making a positive difference? One of the highlights of my summer was a series of conversations with Dennis Boecker, an innovation expert and friend who I've known and respected since the early days of WOL at Bosch. This short article we wrote together describes how social learning programs can transform passive awareness (of SDG, ESG, etc) into active contribution. By enabling employees to discover their personal connection to the company’s goals and how to act on that, companies can foster higher engagement and a greater sense of belonging while cultivating additional sources of innovation and organizational resilience. What do you think? In trying to respond to an external change driver, can you go beyond learning bites and "awareness" communications and instead connect and include employees to make a positive difference? #innovation #employeeengagement #sociallearning #sustainability #SDG #ESG #workingoutloud #WOL p.s. "Ein großes, herzliches Dankeschön" (I hope that's right!) to Dennis Boecker for generously sharing his time and insights. I hope to enjoy more of both, preferably over beer in Berlin! 🍺 😊 Note: A German version of the article, written by native German speakers :-), appears below the English text.
