How can you motivate a coachee who is not committed to the coaching process?
A few keys: 1) Choose the right coachees -- I've had potential clients come to me who do not have the immediate capacity to be coached. Timing is important. Sometimes we postpone for a few months but we pick up when they are ready. 2) Start Strong -- Start with a VERY strong discovery session. This session should last at least two hours (maybe even do it in person if possible). I think the mistake many coaches make in this session is that its not introspective enough, and focuses more on the problems than the person. 3) If you feel things waning, there are no rules here. I've done everything from encouraging taking a break to understanding what's getting in the way. Usually, it's a personal issue and has nothing to do with the coach.

What are the signs of a strong client rapport in business coaching?
I discuss two types of listening in my book and coaching practice to quickly build rapport: P2P and P2B. 1) P2P (person-to-person listening) -- listening without judgment, confirming what you hear, and bringing multiple senses into the discussion. When you focus on the other person, come from a place of curiosity, and hold the client whole, your own views will be out of focus. This is key to building rapport as many clients can discern when you are judging them. 2) P2B listening (person to belonging listening) - a key way to build rapport is listening through observing. Leave time for pauses. Note when something is different or when someone seems out of sorts. This is key to building rapport as the client will feel seen and heard.
