At Assemble.FYI we’ve made it a priority to address this issue by offering sustainable, impactful solutions for smaller universities and HBCUs, moving beyond reliance on gifts and grants. Within the next six months, we will be rolling out our premium online courses in partnership with a select number of institutions. Our courses, spanning various categories, are designed to excite, attract, and prepare students for thriving careers in high-demand job fields. Here’s how we’re taking action: 1. Partnered with esteemed academics to design relevant, impactful curricula. 2. Recruited industry-leading professionals to deliver these courses. 3. Established a consortium to bring universities together to address shared challenges. 4. Invested in AI to enhance and modernize the student learning experience. Bloomberg Philanthropies is donating $600 million to four historically Black medical schools, boosting their endowments and supporting the education of future Black doctors. 🏫 Recipients: Howard University College of Medicine - $175M Meharry Medical College - $175M Morehouse School of Medicine - $175M Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science - $75M This initiative, part of the Greenwood Initiative, addresses systemic healthcare inequities and underinvestment. I had the privilege of joining a panel with fellow phenomenal Black male math educators Kristopher J. Childs, Ph.D. James ONeal, Jr., M.Ed. Shane Wiggan at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - NCTM where we shared our voices about the hopes and aspirations of Black boys in mathematics. One question stood out: What impactful message can we share on Monday morning to enhance the experiences of Black boys in math? A few years ago, I observed a group of middle school boys playing marbles, measuring distance with a handspan technique to settle disputes of distance from a hole. Why outside? Why not in the classroom? It reminded me of the need for recognizing mathematical genius outside traditional classrooms. Here are my continuing thoughts: 1. Math Giftedness Thrives in Safety: Black boys often thrive in environments where they feel safe and accepted—often not in schools. A sense of Belonging doesn’t equate to actual safety. 2. Black Boys Are Always Creating Authentic Worlds for Math Exploration: Their ways of experiencing the world, the peculiar, unorthodox, problem-solving approaches are often down-played. We must broaden our definitions of valid learning experiences. 3. The Hidden Mathematical Spaces of Black Boys Are Often Overlooked: Mathematical brilliance exists in everyday spaces—like barbershops and neighborhoods—where Black boys feel valued. I see so many examples of problem solving, reasoning, measuring, probabilistic reasoning and the list goes on!

🌟 Black Women Are Tapping Out! 🌟 "Black women have always been the backbone of our homes, communities, and this country. We are the fixers, the caretakers, and the leaders who show up when others cannot. Yet, we are often denied the respect, rest, and care we deserve." In my first Medium article, I reflect on the relentless overextension that Black women face and why it’s time for us to reclaim our rest. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s powerful words, I explore what it means to prioritize self-preservation as an act of resistance and healing. Here are the numbers and the stories. Our fellowship investment in aspiring Black male educators is $27,230 per fellow + additional $35,000 in living stipend over two semesters. That’s a total value of $62,230 to support young men who want to become teachers without ever having to take on the responsibility of being the teacher of record while getting their credential. Since launching in 2021 we have had 70 applicants, accepted 20 into the fellowship, 4 now have their credentials and in classrooms as teachers, 5 in the last year of their program and will have their certifications by May 2025 and 6 new in the pipeline who are just getting started. This is the work. It’s not about them getting a “job” or living in affordable housing. It’s about the deep transformative work that happens over two years in relationship with us (the village) and them establishing their careers and pathways to living in their commnities where they teach.
