Reflection on School Culture: Why is School Culture So Important??? 🍎 For some Children and Adolescents, school is a Safe and Nurturing space in their lives. A place where they experience Empowerment, Peace, and Stability. For other Children and Adolescents, school is an Unsafe and Non-Nurturing space in their lives. A place where they experience Disempowerment, Unrest and Instability. For some Teachers and School Staff Members, school is a place where they experience Acceptance, Belonging, Relentless Joy and Personal and Professional Fulfillment. For some Teachers and School Staff Members, school is a place where they experience Rejection, Exclusion, Relentless Despair and Personal and Professional Unfulfillment. Hands up if you know the answer! If you've taught, I guarantee you have used 'hands up' as a way of gathering answers. But research, and common sense, has shown the limitations of this strategy for developing oracy, confidence and self efficacy amongst ALL pupils. So what's wrong with hands going up? 🙋Confident, able children always getting picked and showing off their understanding 🙋Less able children learn to never put their hand up for fear of failure 🙋Assessment for learning across the children who you may need to support is very challenging if you do not hear their understanding 🙋Teacher may just grab the answer from the first hand that goes up without providing adequate thinking time 🙋 Only one voice is heard out of 30 making this very passive for most So we need to think differently. We need strategies that 💬increase whole class engagement (many purposeful discussions not just one voice at a time) 💬Allow all voices to be heard but not necessarily in front of all the peers (support those more anxious children) 💬 Give the teacher the opportunity to circulate and hear different discussions, which allows for active assessment and identification of misconceptions 🔨At 'The Oracy Shift', our mission is to equip teachers with the strategies to achieve this in class. With insight into the more effective tools and approaches that will boost oracy and banish the hands up approach forever. ➡️Follow now and join the mission! #oracy #theoracyshift #education #schools #learningdevelopment #primary #founder #startup #classroom

For today’s edition of “From the Desk of Dr. Nate,” the focus is on “Mentor/Mindset Styles.” In his book “10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People,” Dr. David Yeager devotes an early chapter to his comprehensive research on mentorship and young people, and what it means for bosses, teachers, parents, and coaches alike to adopt a true “mentor mindset.” As Dr. Yeager illustrates, motivating young people requires a healthy blend of both high standards and high support. For parents of pre-teens and adolescents, this includes maintaining clearly communicated, achievable standards for our children, while at the same time offering them genuine guidance, feedback, and words of specific encouragement. Parents who have high standards for their children in the absence of high support (“the enforcer”) may or may not get the outcomes they hope for, but are sure to result in a relationship with their child marked by conflict and resentment. Parents who have low standards for their children but offer a lot of support (“the protector”) may or may not get the outcomes they hope for, but are sure to result in a relationship with their child marked by overdependence and self-doubt. While none of us ever fit nicely and neatly into one category or another, this framework can help us to better understand how to more effectively shape our role as a mentor to the young people in our lives. #fromthedeskofdrnate #drnatepsych #child #adolescent #mentalhealth #mentormindset

98% of children have genius levels of creativity. But by the time they've finished school, that genius is gone. Poof. Vanished. In Unlocking Your Child’s Potential: Nurturing Brilliance and Shaping Futures, authors Jan Mühlfeit, a leader, global strategist and coach, and Kateřina Krůtová, an experienced lecturer in the field of education and child development, deliver a startlingly insightful and exciting discussion of how to bring out the best in your children. In the book, you’ll learn how to avoid the four most common and basic mistakes made by parents and teachers―including focusing on weaknesses while forgetting strengths, neglecting why children do what they do, controlling time instead of harnessing energy, and focusing on success instead of happiness―and learn to achieve something for yourself and your children. You’ll gain valuable and actionable knowledge you can apply immediately in areas like: * Positive psychology and how children’s brains actually function * How to search for a child’s true self, their authenticity, and their exceptional character * Strategies for encouraging and harnessing energy, motivation, and inspiration in young children Perfect for parents, teachers and coaches everywhere, Unlocking Your Child’s Potential is also a must-read resource for early childhood educators, social workers who work with young children, and anyone else interested in bettering the lives of the youngest among us.

The power of "Yet" or "Not yet" In her TED talk, Carol Dweck shares a powerful insight from a Chicago high school where students faced a unique grading system. Rather than receiving failing grades, they were given a "Not yet" grade if they didn't pass a course. This subtle change reframed failure as part of a learning journey, instilling in students the belief that they were on a path of growth. But instead of embracing the power of yet, imagine being bound by the domination of the now and labeled as a failure! Research revealed something fascinating. When faced with failure, some students for their next test turned to cheating instead of studying more, Some others were looking for someone who did worse than they did to boost their self-esteem; otherwise, they fell into self-loathing. This simple shift from "now" to "yet", from “you failed” to “not yet” can transform mindsets. Now imagine a classroom environment embracing a growth mindset, where "Yet" permeates through its culture within the family and society. This begs the questions: "Are we raising kids for NOW instead of YET? Are we raising kids who are obsessed with getting As? or don't know how to dream big dreams?" The entire educational system, not only in our locality but worldwide, is falling short in raising kids who dare to dream big and focus on holistic development, creativity, and exploration rather than solely on academic achievements. As we reflect on Dweck's insights, let's consider how we can foster growth mindsets in our homes, classrooms, and communities. How might we encourage our kids on resilience, perseverance, and a love for learning? How can we inspire children to dream big and embrace the journey of growth? Feel free to share your ideas and reflections below in the comments! #GES #growthmindset #thepowerofyet
