Based on everything I have seen and heard lately, we have certainly surpassed the 'moment' referenced in this clip. In just four years, we've gone from Racial Reckoning to regression and pushback. It warrants the question: Were we stuck in our feelings about racial equity? To continue moving forward, we have to shift from performative actions to sustained, impactful efforts. This means committing to active antiracism in our personal and professional lives, investing in DEI initiatives with long-term goals, and holding ourselves accountable. I believe that we can all work together to make a real difference for future generations. Jemar Tisby, PhD speaks a TON of truth right here! Many times it is the most “fragile” white person or people who raise the objection. Change, especially racial progress, scares and angers them. They are the ones who say. That racial justice efforts are: divisive, woke, CRT, a distraction, etc. While the group is fragile when it comes to race they are often powerful. They tend to be some of the loudest and wealthiest people in an organization. So their opinions have an outsized influence. At this point many organizational leaders back down, slow down, or lay down and succumb to these fragile people. Cultural Humility in a Time of Political Polarization... This election and the last two have highlighted the political polarization that our country finds itself in. It has uncovered how deeply divided we are and created a fear of having conversations about our political differences. Many of us want things to be different! We want to be able to have conversations with others about politics without the fear of being labeled a racist, a bigot, a liberal, and having our morality questioned. I wrote this post as a reflection on how I believe #culturalhumility can help us as people engage in conversations that can be polarizing. No matter what your political affiliation or beliefs are I believe we would be a better society if we developed deep curiosity. I’m excited to share the insights from a new publication, coauthored by myself, Terrance L. (T.L.) Boyd, PhD, Angelica Leigh, Ph.D., Ricky Burgess, and Vic Marsh, Ph.D. In this paper, we reconceptualize allyship — finding that racial minority leaders can be viewed as allies for racial equity. But, we find that racial minority leaders encounter resistance (in the form of lower evaluations and support from employees) when they engage in allyship behaviors that aim to improve treatment and equity for their own racial minority group (as opposed to other racial minority groups). We highlight a novel framing tactic for racial allyship – voice amplification framing – which minimizes the negative effects associated with same-race allyship. #research #dei #allyship #leadership #organizationalbehavior Check out our findings in more detail:

Power and Ignorance: A Dangerous Combination 💯 James Baldwin once said, "It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have." These words still resonate today, perhaps more than ever. When those in positions of power are unaware or unwilling to recognize the injustices happening around them, the consequences are dire. Ignorance, when coupled with authority, has the ability to shape systems, policies, and cultures that perpetuate inequality. It allows biases to go unchecked, voices to go unheard, and communities to be left behind. But here’s the flip side: knowledge and awareness in the hands of those with influence can become the greatest allies to progress. When leaders are willing to learn, listen, and act with empathy, they create spaces for fairness and equality to thrive. In today’s world, we need leadership that’s grounded in understanding—not ignorance. This slide won't make my upcoming keynote on #Diversity, and will have to be saved for a longer workshop, but it raises an important issue I want to share here: I've done some pretty deep and radical research on racism, fascism, and diversity, but my kids think some of my ideas are already out of date. Are they right about everything? Time will tell. Some of their current ideas might be seen as out of date or even reactionary (objectionable) in 30 years. We can't read the future, nor can we achieve omniscience. This is a superb reason to never be too ideologically dogmatic. (This obviously does NOT mean that we have to tolerate abuses of power while we explore and educate for the next 1,000 years.) My advice to younger advocates: The purpose of DEI is improving society. The best way to do that, long term, is to teach versus shame and cancel. Enter discussions with generosity and a collaborative spirit versus an alienating, aggressive power move and patronizing condescension. We want to change the world, not just bully and shame people. We need a large majority to become part of the solution for these improvement to stick.
