Great article by Visa's CMO, Frank Cooper III. With the creator economy projected to grow to $480 billion by 2027, athletes-as-creators represent an area with incredibly untapped potential for both brands and athletes. In my experience managing athlete marketing on behalf of major brands and early-stage consumer brands, athlete-creators can be far more appealing to brands for three reasons: 1. An athlete with no recognition other than their sport, team, or on-field/court performance, forces a brand to spend more on additional team/league sponsorships to secure marks (the players' team uniform, league logo, etc.) for the audience to better recognize the athlete 2. An athlete who doesn't have the ability to create his or her own content forces a brand to spend high production costs and fees to produce branded content featuring the athlete 3. An athlete with no platform requires a brand to spend even more on linear and/or digital media to distribute that content to reach a target audience For athletes, being a creator positions you to be far more commercially viable for a brand, as your marketing value is less dependent on your performance in your given sport and more on the content you create + the audience you can immediately reach with a tap on your smartphone. Visa is doing a great job capitalizing on this shift, having recently hosted a creator's boot camp for 100 Team Visa athletes in Paris. Brands and athletes must adapt or be left behind because consumer viewing habits and preferences will continue to change with or without them.

Founded by Kevin Plank back in 1996, Under Armour rose to fame for its 'sweat wicking' fabric technology across its performance apparel. With its roots firmly in American football, Under Armour had its first IPO on the Nasdaq in 2005, initially raising $153 million. From sponsoring Major League Baseball to dropping their own range of technical trainers it would be fair to say the Baltimore based brand has become a household name. Here in the UK, the American sportswear brand found a slightly different home on 110 sporting' Scousers that made it one of their own in a pre-pandemic era, just like the more recent ON running trainer craze in the Mersey city. Moving into the more financial side of things, Under Armour recently announced they were expecting a larger net loss for its fiscal 2025 outlook due to its re-structuring plan. Re-structuring costs are now expected to reach a total of between $140 million to $160 million as oppose to $70 million to $90 million as previously estimated. On Friday we hosted our inaugural Catalina Demand Mixer. It was AWESOME (s/o Sendoso and ForgeX for sponsoring). Some of my favorite learnings from the virtual mixer👇 BACKGROUND We run Demand Collective-- a private membership for great DG practitioners who feel like they're operating on an island and want to connect with and learn from other ballers. Last Friday we ran our first virtual event. A virtual mixer for DG practitioners w/ 3+ YOE. It went better than expected, here are my favorite takeaways. 1️⃣ The emotional game is just as hard. Marketing gaslighting is real. Lots of stories of CEOs absolutely not getting it. You can lose confidence as a marketer in that situation, there's nothing more helpful than hopping on a call and having 6+ other people tell you, to your face "Don't worry, you're not crazy!" The emotional game is hard, peers keep you sane. 2️⃣ Sharpen your axe is underrated. I watched two people come out of a 60min call with realizations that will meaningfully impact their next quarter. (Like fixing LI ads and new campaign ideas). The ROI on that 60-minutes of axe-sharpening is higher than any other way of spending that 60-minutes (and it was free!). Crazy to think about how many times I should be axe-sharpening instead of trying to cut a tree with a dull blade. 3️⃣ The new way (demand gen) is working. One thing has become abundantly clear. I used to be unsure. But I've heard the same story over and over again. And now I'm damn confident, demand gen just works. I heard firsthand from marketers stuck in orgs who execute lead gen. "Our leads are drying up, NNN -> MQL dropping, my CFO wants repeatable leads and I can't do it. It's getting harder and harder." And in the same call heard from NUMEROUS marketers executing demand gen. "We cut almost all search & DR. Invested it all in brand and demand and optimized conversion on site to high-intent forms. It took convincing of our ELT but it's working incredibly well." Want to convince your CFO? Just ask him if he's every bought a tool after downloading a white-paper and getting dripped in a nurture. Always love events like this. There's no better way to get better than learning from other sharp demand practitioners in a group setting. Marketers are (again) turning to Hollywood-style entertainment content to stand out in an increasingly crowded media landscape. Starbucks is the latest entrant into the fray: On Monday, the company announced the launch of Starbucks Studios, which will “produce original entertainment and tell stories that deepen connections and spark conversations" in collaboration with Michael Sugar's Sugar23. Luxury conglomerate LVMH is doing something similar via 22 Montaigne, a new division it launched in February that was created by Superconnector Studios. Superconnector, founded by CAA marketing exec Jae Goodman and John Kaplan will create an individualized approach for LVMH’s brands and figure out what kind of projects make sense for each brand to produce. BUT: with most things in marketing, this is a trend we’ve seen before. Starbucks for example, produced documentaries back in 2019 and 2016. “Hingawaka,” created to mark the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, focused on two women who love coffee; while an original series called “Upstanders” was released in 2016.  So what makes this time different? How can Creators unlock global markets for brands? 🤔 Last week I was honored to speak at CreatorIQ's Connect event, where I discussed how to reach global markets through creator partnerships alongside Liz Grampp from Moose Toys. Here are a few takeaways: 1. Be curious! If you want to enter new markets, talk to industry contacts and creators in the market to get a better understanding. Take it as a learning opportunity and ask questions! At Footballco, as we're a global entity with a unique understanding of different markets, if you have specific questions feel free to reach out to me to chat. 2. Focusing on a creator's audience is crucial. While a lot of professionals focus only on Creators that seem like a perfect fit, understanding the audience of different types of Creators may lead to unique opportunities and amazing partnerships. Liz is a big advocate of this as well! For instance, most beauty and fashion brands aren't actively investing into women's soccer and the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). At Footballco, we have INDIVISA, a women's soccer brand that has helped beauty and lifestyle brands integrate into the sport successfully with amazing results. Indivisa is an internal brand I'm really excited about, not only because I'm an Angel City Football Club ticket holder, but because of the untold stories and amazing audiences connected to women's soccer. 3. Understanding the platforms, their initiatives and their algorithms are essential for success. While it's great that a Creator has their own audience, if you understand social video at a deeper level and how best to incorporate Creators into a larger plan, you'll see the best ROI. When the new National Hockey League (NHL) season starts next month, fans of the Dallas Stars will be able to watch matches on Victory+, a free ad-supported #streaming platform that launched this summer. It joins other team-focused sports streamers that have emerged recently and that are aiming to attract the most loyal and local sports fans. The trend isn’t just a signal of a changing #sportsmedia landscape. It’s also a reflection of the shaky status of regional sports networks around the U.S. whose business models are being threatened by cord-cutting; the owner of the largest RSN portfolio in the country, Diamond Sports Group, is under bankruptcy protection. Meanwhile, national sports rights are commanding bigger deals than ever before, and national sports viewership is at a fever pitch. “At the same time that the RSNs are running into trouble, the interest in the content is higher than ever before and people want to watch it in different ways,” says Wim Sweldens.
