About
Meet Kimberly Bryant, a visionary and renowned leader in the technology industry and Founder of Black Girls CODE and the Black Innovation Lab by ASCEND Ventures. She’s committed to creating opportunities to uplift marginalized communities and to drive impact through innovation.
Black Innovation Lab is a startup accelerator initiative of ASCEND Ventures to be headquartered in Memphis, TN focused on the next generation of tech innovators in the US South building companies that make a societal impact and create pathways to equity and generational wealth.
Prior to ASCEND Ventures, Kimberly founded and built Black Girls CODE, a social change organization aimed at introducing girls of color aged 6-18 to technology and computer science with a focus on entrepreneurial concepts. Under her leadership, Black Girls CODE grew from a grassroots initiative to an international organization with chapters across the US and in South Africa, reaching over 100,000 students. Her dedication to increasing opportunities for women and girls in technology has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including being named to Business Insider's "The 25 Most Influential African-Americans in Technology," The Root 100, and the Ebony Power 100 lists, as well as receiving a White House Champion of Change award and an Ingenuity Award in Social Progress from the Smithsonian Institute.
Kimberly's extensive experience in various industries allows her to provide valuable insights and advice to companies in both public and private sectors. She advises many startup founders and nonprofit executives as well through her board advisory roles and private 1on1 coaching.
Kimberly's innovative work has impacted the lives of thousands of girls and women of color, equipping them with the skills and opportunities they need to excel in the technology industry. Her vision and leadership have been recognized worldwide, and she's a sought-after speaker whose work has been featured in Forbes, FastCompany, Wired, and the New York Times.

Why is storytelling essential for non-profit branding?
In my experience the best means or avenues to share your nonprofit stories are the places your audience or community “lives”. This means that in some cases social media will be your best means of communication but that may not reach ALL of your audience. Some of your community may be reached better via email and in some cases yes even good old “snail mail”. The key is to know who your audience or community is and to take your stories to them. Don’t leave it to chance that they can and will find you. When you understand this? Communicate often and routinely to build rapport and relationships well before you need their help.
-
How can you inspire your donors to give more effectively?
In my experience in building strong bonds and support from donors that what most moves them to action is the power of authentic stories. This can often be reflected in the personal stories of the founder or other members of the team but it also often prevalent in the impact stories taken from participants of your nonprofit organization. Donors thrive on seeing stories which show the impact of their contributions and these stories are the best means to both attracting and maintaining a committed community of donors. Tell real stories with real people and make it personal.

This body of work has contributed to knowledge about the complexities of Black girlhood and has offered interventions to safeguard Black girls during this sacred but vulnerable period of life.
Much of this work is performed by Black women. Recognizing the connection between the political and the personal, this edited collection, Ourselves in Our Work: Black Women Scholars of Black Girlhood, turns the focus from the girls to the women who study them to illuminate how they situate themselves in their work with Black girls. Contributors use tools such as autoethnography, scholarly personal narrative, autobiography, or memoir, to share experiences, perspectives, and embodied knowledge derived from their collaborations with Black girls.
This book includes work from 15 scholars of Black girlhood over 13 chapters.Other authorsSee publication -

In her op-ed for the Boston Globe, Kimberly Bryant addresses the escalating racism against minority-led venture capital (VC) funds. She brings to light the systemic barriers and racial biases that predominantly affect these funds, despite growing awareness and efforts towards diversity and inclusion in the venture capital industry. Bryant’s article critically examines the stark disparities in funding, underscoring how minority-led VC funds often struggle to secure investments compared to their white-led counterparts.
Bryant highlights the broader impact of these disparities on the entrepreneurial ecosystem, particularly on communities of color. She emphasizes the need for breaking down these barriers to foster a more equitable and inclusive financial landscape. The op-ed is a call to action for systemic change in the venture capital sector, advocating for dismantling racial biases and creating a level playing field. Bryant argues for an environment where talent and innovation, rather than race or background, are the primary determinants of success for VC fund leaders. Her piece is a significant contribution to the conversation around equity in venture capital funding and the vital role of minority-led funds in driving innovation and economic growth.
