It was great seeing the innovation on display at MOVE America last week. A few observations: 1. A shift in mindset: From autonomy as a great new technology, to a more practical tool that improves transportation systems. Both the technology and the business around autonomy are maturing. 2. Along those lines: remote driving is becoming a powerful tool in the driverless toolbox. The OEMs and AV companies I spoke with last week are looking to leverage remote driving to bring autonomy to market faster and wider. 3. EVs seem to be going through a similar evolution. I was struck by how many new technologies and business models were on display to address the EV growth barriers. 4. This was my first time in Austin, and it lived up to the reputation of being wonderfully weird. Live music and craft beers everywhere, the world's largest urban bat colony (true story!), clean and walkable streets with friendly people - great place to have a conference. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend Advancing Preconstruction in Denver. It was great to interface with our current customers and speak to several construction industry specialists. I'm not much of a LinkedIn activist. I’m really not much of a social media activist whatsoever. This may be due to Facebook Memories reminding me of how cringey I was as a 14-year-old. However, I was compelled to share one major takeaway I had from that event: Structured Precon Data. To me, this is the most important gain organizations are set to receive that will enable them to fully embrace and maximize the advancements in construction technology. The market is flooded with shiny objects. I'm not here to dissuade anyone from seeking those out; we boast a few of our own. But for several of these next-gen precon technologies, the prerequisite is Structured Precon Data. If the underlying data isn’t formatted and filterable, it’s nearly impossible to analyze the micro-trends within your organization and industry. It also provides no context for why the macro-trends are what they are. If the data capture isn't automated, it becomes a burden to the teams mining the data. And let's be honest, I don't know anyone who's sitting around killing time in the construction industry. Structured Precon Data is the achieved goal produced from estimating as a role. The path that many GCs are taking starts with centralizing day-to-day estimating responsibilities into a preconstruction platform. This provides estimators with the functionality to do their job more effectively while automating the data capture. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Do you agree?

Had some great conversations last night at the #RMUC24 in Palm Springs (I could think of worse places to be... Great work Rent Manager!) and was noticing a common thread among operators I spoke to. Moving maintenance internally. We were talking about the Property Meld benchmarking report, and how the data is telling us just that! There has been a big shift in property maintenance operations to internal technicians, and it takes insights to track profitability.
