It was so timely to deliver the US economic outlook presentation at the National Council of State Legislatures summit in Louisville, Kentucky. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the NCSL summit is the largest meeting for state legislators and staff. The role of state legislatures is more important than ever as Congress faces gridlock. State and local governments constitute almost 15% of GDP and spent almost $4trn on public goods and services in 2023. State and local governments are responsible for more than 20 million jobs, or 13% of total employment and almost seven times the Federal workforce. In my presentation, I highlighted the risk that the US and global expansion are downshifting to trend-like pace with the risk of a break in the labor markets rising. As the Fed balances its dual mandate, we expect the Fed to move faster, easing 50bp in September and another 50bp in November, but note that core inflation remains sticky above central bank targets. One of Northern Trust’s greatest strengths is our global community. It allows us to build connections with colleagues no matter how far and deliver tailored solutions to clients around the world. I am a big believer of “diversity of views” to build best possible solutions. Recently, I had the opportunity to continue to connect with our Northern Trust internal partners and clients across the globe during my latest travels, visiting the United Kingdom, Ireland, Monaco, and The Netherlands.  While in London, I had the chance to speak at an event hosted by our EMEA and North America Latin Heritage Business Resource Council. Special thanks to Camila Sastoque, Roberto Crivari, Virgilio Mendoza, Liliana Pachon, FCCA, and Annette Martin for organizing and hosting such an energizing event. During this event, I shared my perspective on seizing career opportunities as well as facing and overcoming challenges while taking on broader leadership and global roles: · “Speak slow, speak less, speak last” – Remember to speak slowly and clearly when engaging large audiences. Take time to refine your stories so that your messages are clear and concise. Listen carefully before speaking.  · “When under stress, take time to pause and not quickly react” – Although important, emotions shouldn’t completely lead our decision-making. Try to keep your emotions balanced and consider the emotions of others while keeping collaboration and progress top of mind. · “Leverage what you learn to motivate and inspire others” – Learn both from others and your experiences, and apply those insights to improve your work and inspire others to achieve their personal and professional aspirations. When people are inspired, everyone can strengthen teamwork, boost morale, and achieve team goals. Treat partners like clients – listen to their needs, and treat them with dignity and respect. Through all of our Northern Trust Business Resource Councils we can continue to offer events such as these that drive an inclusive and collaborative culture, exemplifying what it means to be #OneNorthernTrust.

DC participants should be given annuity options but it should not be a default option. There are serious #fiduciary issues associated with annuity purchases and the risks have increased with more offshore, related party, and higher risk investment activities. These can be even more significant in private equity owned #annuity providers.

Looking bottom-up at the boards of real-world companies, rather than top-down based on legal or policy norms, reveals a wide range of options. “Legacy planning” hopefully will continue to replace “estate planning”. Wealtholders deeply care about passing family values down every bit as much or more than traditional estate planning focus. Philanthropic planning becomes a multi-generational endeavor for ultra high net worth families. I also agree that personal flourishing is one of the highest priorities for UHNW wealtholders.
