Last week, I had the honor of speaking on a panel entitled, “Creating Sustainable DEI Strategies”, hosted by the NeuroLeadership Institute (NLI). #NLI’s Global Head of DEI Janet M. Stovall, CDE kicked off the discussion sharing insights about the current landscape of DEI. She shared 3 key components to help sustain this important work in constantly evolving workplaces: ✅ Accountability ✅ Adaptability ✅ Sustainability Maria Hernandez, #NLI moderated our conversation where Allison Wise Deputy Director, Office of Minority & Women Inclusion, SEC and I discussed some of our strategies and stories to help sustain this work. Integrating #DEIA into organizational priorities coupled with leadership commitment is paramount to long term sustainability. It’s also important that there is clarity and shared understanding of what #DEIA truly means, especially in this climate, to mitigate any misconceptions about this work. DEIA is an outcome, not a box to check, and these are the definitions I use to guide our efforts in #USDA. ✅ Diversity: is the rich mix of characteristics individuals possess, including race, gender, age, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, educational background. It involves appreciating and valuing one’s uniqueness – including backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. When you intentionally work to ensure your workforce reflects the public you serve, the outcome is diversity. ✅ Equity: Equity is about ensuring fairness and justice in treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement. Unlike equality, which treats everyone the same, equity provides each person with the specific support they need to thrive. When you check and adjust your systems, processes, and procedures for fairness, the outcome is equity. ✅ Inclusion: Inclusion ensures that all individuals feel welcome to contribute to their fullest potential. It's about creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong, their voices are heard, and their contributions are valued. When you consider the diverse perspectives of your workforce and treat people with respect, the outcome is inclusion. ✅ Accessibility: Accessibility ensures that all individuals, regardless of physical, cognitive, or other differences, have access to facilities, technology, and resources. It’s about removing barriers that prevent full participation in our workplace so that everyone can succeed. When you ensure your workforce has access to what they need to succeed, the outcome is accessibility. Partnering with organizations who understand what #DEIA is and its importance and share our values and commitment to institutionalizing #DEIA is integral to sustaining this work. The association community, through ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership, has urged both presidential campaigns to recognize and prioritize the contributions of trade and professional associations in their policy agendas. From the letter, associations account for over 1 million jobs, generating more than $71 billion in wages, and hold more than 272,000 events every year that attract nearly 52 million participants and generate $42 billion in spending. Many of us are grappling with questions about the future of INGOs. Recently, I've been reflecting on ways that we can support locally led development - especially in light of the very fragmented ecosystem that local leaders must navigate. There's a serious need for greater coordination across partners, in support of local leaders who must drive change. At Results for Development, we've considered how we might be part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem. My latest blog explores how we are working to strengthen the ecosystem around local leaders by connecting the dots and closing the gaps. “Connector” roles are critical to #localization. This piece is excellent and provides concrete changes to our governance structures so that a multiracial democracy can be realized. It’s more than a reliance on hope or goodwill using executive orders and calls upon real change to legal standards, how we analyze budget and legislative decisions and strong proactive and apparatus to deliver equal protection.

I wrote a column for Forbes to make sense of the findings from the latest study from Opportunity Insights: Changing Opportunity: Class and Racial Gaps in Economic Mobility. One finding definitively answered a question that I’ve asked myself many times: Will I see progress for Black children growing up in poverty in my lifetime? The answer, unequivocally, is yes!    There were a few head-scratchers in data—some I puzzled, others I worried about. Not surprisingly, the one that got picked up by the press was that the mobility outcomes of Black kids from low-income families born in the late 1970s to the early 1990s improved, while the outcomes of their low-income white peers went the other way. This finding led to the The New York Times headline, Who Can Achieve the American Dream? Race Matters Less Than It Used To. This is a good thing. However, while not deemed headline-worthy, the findings suggest that the headline could have just as well been Race Still Matters. The key to having meaningful conversations at work? Be R.I.C.H. Neiko Lampkin, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Manager at Expel, presented at our ERG Summit about leveraging the R.I.C.H. framework to explore issues of intersectionality. According to Performance Paradigm, R.I.C.H. dialogue is “a communication method that strengthens relationships by exploring variations in points of view around race, identity, culture, and heritage.” In other words, it’s a way of having meaningful dialogue that acknowledges people’s backgrounds and lived experiences. Real, meaningful conversations are crucial to the success of any ERG. Members expect to be able to bring their full selves to the table and to be seen, heard, respected, and accepted for who they are. The R.I.C.H. communication method sets the stage for conversations that honor employees as whole, intersectional people — and ultimately, it demonstrates how acknowledging our differences can actually bring us closer together. Despite the fact that collaborative funds are being talked about as the next big thing in philanthropy, there's still a lot we don't know about their value-add to philanthropy. Often the discussion centers on how they enhance the experience and impact of donors. This new piece from Jennifer Stout draws attention to the importance of examining the experiences of grantees who receive funding from collaborative funds, as compared to their experiences with "direct funders". For The Freedom Fund, our understanding of how grantee partners perceive us largely comes from continuously seeking feedback (more on that here: https://lnkd.in/eEa6u7F6). We also see a big part of our role as identifying and building relationships with groups who have tremendous potential for deep, sustainable impact but who more traditional funders might overlook. As Jen says, we need more research across the field to draw broader conclusions and make the case for why collaborative funds, when structured appropriately, can fill gaps and do things differently.
