Reflection on Development as a Co-Founder of a nonprofit: With 10 years quickly approaching for our organization Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources (PIK2AR) I remember when we first started and how quickly we grew. Beginning with an annual event, I saw how outcomes really didn’t increase until we started case managing; providing direct services. It was crucial for us to understand the difference between hosting events and providing direct services. Data shows that while community events can raise awareness, lasting change comes from empowering individuals through targeted services and long-term development. Data: • A 2020 report by the Bridgespan Group found that nonprofits focusing on direct services, such as education, job training, and mentorship, are 30% more likely to create sustainable outcomes for individuals than those that prioritize large-scale events. This underscores the importance of long-term, service-based support rather than short-term engagement. • The Nonprofit Finance Fund’s 2018 State of the Sector survey reported that organizations offering continuous service programs had a 40% higher rate of helping individuals achieve long-term self-sufficiency compared to those focusing primarily on community events. Investing in direct services leads to measurable and sustained success. Things we considered after evaluating our organization: 1. Start with Your Community’s Needs: Use surveys, interviews, and research to identify the specific challenges your target community faces. This will help you develop relevant programs that address their unique needs. 2. Develop Programs That Build Skills: Offer services such as financial literacy training, career counseling, or mentorship programs. These should be accessible and designed to empower participants to tackle their challenges independently. 3. Measure Outcomes, Not Attendance: Define success through long-term impacts, like improved job placement, financial stability, or educational attainment. Track these outcomes over time to gauge your organization’s true impact. 4. Partner for Resources and Expertise: Collaborate with other local nonprofits, educational institutions, or businesses to enhance your program offerings. Partnerships can help you provide holistic services, such as job training, health services, or financial advice. 5. Stay Adaptive and Responsive: Regularly evaluate your programs and adjust based on the evolving needs of your community. This will ensure your services remain effective and impactful. By focusing on direct services and long-term individual development, our organization created measurable, lasting change. The title is long but young people would certainly get it: "‘Stick up for Yourself…Delete the Comment and Block Her. Like … It’s Not that Difficult’." It's the title of our article in the just-published collection "Youth Wellbeing in a Technology Rich World" edited by Mizuko Ito at UC Irvine and Carrie James at Harvard and just opened to public review (by you, dear readers!) by MIT Press. The title picks up on teen social norms around (not) seeking help for or burdening others with their social problems. Highlights in the paper (led by Tijana Milosevic at University College Dublin looking at AI interventions in cyberbullying situations) are 1) its exploration of dignity in addressing bullying 2) its reliance on young people's experience, and 3) that, even though the label of the behavior includes the word "cyber," the context of cyberbullying is not online only. The problem of bullying is more social than it is individual, and "social" happens offline as well as online. So taking down bullying content rarely solves the problem. "In order to design interventions that are meaningful from a youth perspective, we need to see cyberbullying through a broader, relational lens that factors in both online and offline aspects of youth sociality," we write. 👉An illustration, where "Solveig" is the target: Three other girls for some reason decide that Solveig is to be excluded from a party. They take a bunch of pictures at the party, where she is obviously absent, but tag her anyway in the party photos they post on Instagram, effectively announcing to "everybody" that Solveig was not invited. Her aggressors are performing her social exclusion online, but the context of the relationships and the humiliation is offline.👈 The offline and online parts cannot be separated. So what can AI do? Well, I'll let you read the paper for some interesting ideas on this. ;) But a key take-away is that any intervention technology that youth would actually use needs their input in its design. Transparency can’t exist without accountability. But why are glaring flaws being ignored? We all agree that transparency in government processes is critical. Especially when evaluating nonprofits that provide essential services to at-risk youth. The Orange County Citizens' Commission for Children introduced a process to ensure fairness and transparency. But there’s a question we need to ask: Why hasn’t anyone looked into the discrepancies in the number of reviewers assigned to each nonprofit? Some organizations received evaluations from multiple reviewers. Others? Just a few. How is that fair? How is that transparent? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: If this division is committed to fairness, why didn’t contracting or legal teams flag this inconsistency? Are we really ensuring that nonprofits are evaluated properly? 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭: • If some organizations have fewer reviewers, their scores will be less balanced. • Nonprofits doing important work might receive unfairly lower scores. • The evaluation process should be consistent across the board. Transparency is more than just a word. It’s a commitment to fairness. It’s making sure every organization has an equal chance to be evaluated fairly. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞? 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: ↳ Every discrepancy needs to be examined and corrected. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: ↳ All nonprofits should have the same number of reviewers. 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: ↳ If some nonprofits are reviewed by fewer people, how is that fair? Nonprofits are on the frontlines, helping the most vulnerable. Their work impacts real lives. And yet, they face the possibility of being misjudged simply because of an unequal evaluation process. Is this truly transparency? We need to demand accountability. We need to make sure transparency isn’t just on paper but in practice. Because without accountability, transparency is meaningless. The Commission has the responsibility to make sure every organization is judged fairly. This isn’t just about fairness—it’s about ensuring that nonprofits can continue serving the people who need them most. 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬: How can the Commission expect nonprofits to thrive if they aren’t evaluated properly? Shouldn’t we demand that these flaws are addressed before more organizations are harmed? Why weren’t these glaring issues caught earlier in the process? The evaluation system needs more than just surface-level transparency. It needs accountability at every stage. We must call for a process that truly reflects fairness. For nonprofits. For the communities they serve. For the future of those at risk. What’s your view?
