"Is product development an art or a science?" It’s a question I’ve thought about throughout my career, and after reading Marty Cagan’s recent article, I feel validated in my long-held belief that it’s both. For years, I’ve approached product development as a balance of art and science. On one hand, we use hypotheses, testing, and iteration—clear elements of science—to solve problems for our customers. On the other, there’s an undeniable artistry in engineering, design, and crafting solutions that not only work but inspire and resonate with users. Marty’s article captures this perfectly. What struck me most is how he frames creativity in product management as "discovery" and problem-solving through experimentation. It’s this blend of art and science that drives great products, and reading his perspective felt like a validation of the balance we strive for every day. At the core of effective engineering leadership is the ability to stay connected with your team. This is perhaps the most challenging aspect because retaining the respect of your people is difficult unless you remain technically involved yourself. In my journey as an engineering leader, staying true to the individual contributor role that originally earned their respect has kept me close. This approach extends beyond technical expertise; it's about maintaining a deep connection with the core activities that propel product development forward at Gearflow. One of my biggest professional fears is becoming irrelevant or disconnected from my team and our work. This fear motivates me to continually reinvent and retool in response to market demands. Next month, I'll be sharing about my adventures generating synthetic data recently. And while I'm no expert when I start preparing for these talks, the process is incredibly valuable. It's less about delivering a perfect talk and more about how the preparation expands my thinking and exposes me to new capabilities. This helps me connect the dots to opportunities at Gearflow that bring real innovation to our customers. Speaking regularly holds me accountable and pushes me to learn ahead of the curve, ensuring I remain relevant and impactful day-to-day. Every talk is a journey of discovery, helping me to lead with humility, communicate clearly, and inspire a culture of innovation through a deep, technical understanding of our work.

★ Keeping your A-Team together with developer AI When DHH spoke about being able to scale from the small by reigning in complexity at his RailsWorld keynote it resonated a lot. I have seen the struggles as teams grow and coordination headwinds slow progress to a crawl. This is actually one of the areas that I am seeing AI help with. A new Jepsen report is out! Jepsen worked with Buf to analyze the safety of Bufstream, a Kafka-compatible streaming system. We found three safety and two liveness issues in Bufstream 0.1.0, including the loss of acknowledged writes in healthy clusters. These problems were resolved by version 0.1.3. We also discovered serious issues in Kafka’s transaction protocol, including write loss, aborted read, and torn transactions. Exciting work from Meta and World Resources Institute who have used AI to create the most detailed map ever made of trees across the planet. This allows anyone to query the height of forest canopies or even individual trees (when they stand isolated enough). The data is now freely available. As a fun test, I used the provided browser (https://lnkd.in/ghxQFmxt) to find one of my favorite neighborhood trees - the giant sequoia in Seattle's Leschi Park. The data accurately shows this tree towering above the others in the park (screenshots in comments below). The team used AI at Meta's DINOv2 visual transformer architecture in order to infer the height of trees given just a satellite or aerial color image as input. This is a very similar technique to 3D photos that you may have seen in your Facebook feed (https://lnkd.in/gXCygk5H), where the depth of an image is computed via AI in order give a 3D effect. I'm looking forward to this work continuing and becoming an important way in which the world measures, reports, and verifies the carbon stored in trees. As industries (from big tech to airlines) purchase biosphere carbon credits to offset emissions, it's critical that they have the best data possible. Improved imagery and AI offer a path to getting there. More info in the project video below.
