The lines between linear and streaming TV have blurred, but ad sales haven’t caught up. It’s time to change that. As a recent article from TVREV wisely points out, consumers don’t differentiate between linear and streaming. They see “TV.” The industry ought to follow suit. A standardized solution that categorizes content rather than channel will help to deliver a more consistent, streamlined experience for advertisers, agencies, publishers AND consumers. On the service provider side, traditional operators and telcos are looking for TV options to offer and entice or retain customers as they pivot away from traditional pay TV and prioritize broadband growth, where pairing entertainment can help maintain customer relationships for other services. In a recent column on StreamTV Insider, Parks Associates Director Eric Sorensen noted that “telcos are pursuing aggressive options with streaming in order to keep the pay TV business operating for as long as feasible.” Parks Associates research showed that as of Q1 2024 Charter’s Spectrum TV services are in 23% of internet homes, up yoy from its 19% market share in each 2022 and 2023. Sorensen wrote that service providers are adopting streaming bundles to lower operational expenses and to appeal to larger advertisers by enabling ad buying across multiple platforms. “Additionally, bundles help prevent churn of the subscriber completely departing,” wrote Sorensen. “Parks Associates anticipates we will continue to see the reemergence of a new kind bundle as a way for pay-TV providers to reengage and entice lost customers.” https://lnkd.in/gUbgPY8J

I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)

As viewer habits continue to shift on Connected TV (CTV), advertisers must do everything to not fall behind. Streaming services now account for 41.4% of TV viewing, meaning there’s a significant opportunity to rethink marketing and ad strategies in this space. Balancing ad load is a necessity. While a slight decrease in ads per hour is encouraging, it’s important to avoid overwhelming viewers. With viewing sessions increasing nearly 7% year-over-year, this is a prime opportunity for brands to engage audiences more effectively. Kudos Samuel Youn. It's great to see this called out from premium publishers. MFA in some senses was encouraged over the years by giving such importance on the (now perceived as) vanity metrics and KPIs. Take for example infinite scroll which until recently was perceived as a positive way to increase content consumption and in turn yield more revenue in comparison to traditional clicks to more content. Now it's been targeted as a source or signal of MFA. Everyone along the chain between the publisher and the buyer benefited from an increase in revenue which Samuel rightly points out was heavily incentivised through rev share based relationships. The answer may be clear (find a way to incentivise non MFA behavior) but the path there is murk at best if only left to publishers to remedy on their own... especially if they are handed more rev share based solutions to help solve things. Also love your call out to Sovrn as they have moved away from rev shares (credit to Walter Knapp for seeing this years ago on the SSP side). It takes alot to go against the grain but I believe (hope?) that we will see more to follow. #adtech #mfa

"And the studio shrunk its streaming loss to $286 million for the first quarter, an improvement over a $511 million loss in Q1 2023.
