✅🖥️ Variety (10/2): “NBCU and Charter announced a new multiyear distribution deal that will make the Peacock Premium ad-supported streaming service for “no additional cost” to Spectrum TV Select video customers. The addition of Peacock to the Spectrum TV lineup comes after Charter inked similar deals for Disney+ and ESPN+, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and Discovery+, Paramount Global’s Paramount+ and BET+, AMC Networks’ AMC+ and Univision’s Vix. All told, according to Charter, through the programming deals reached over the past year, the cable operator will soon provide Spectrum TV Select video customers up to $65/month of retail direct-to-consumer streaming value. Charter is understood to be paying a per-subscriber wholesale fee to the media companies for the rights to bundle their streaming services with Spectrum TV. So while the streaming services are “free” to some of Charter’s cable TV customers, it seems likely that the company will be raising monthly subscription rates to account for the additional linear-plus-streaming programming. Charter also will allow video customers to upgrade to the the ad-free Peacock Premium+ tier. Still, some analysts expect scatter to play a major role in the 2024-25 TV season that traditionally starts in the third week in September. (One analyst) estimates the linear TV advertising scatter market for next season will barely change -- estimated to be $20.68B versus $20.48B for the 2023-24 TV season. Big news in ad land. Will this merger work? It’s not surprising Omnicom and IPG want to merge given that the big bloated ad holding cos are way overdue for consolidation. They are losing control of ad spend which is the cornerstone of their outdated biz model. And now they’re trying to pivot fast. But, will a merger solve for this? My take? This merger buys them time. It’ll work if they streamline in a hard and painful way. That means a lot of job cuts and some new hires. And it means a totally new structure of how services are designed and delivered. That means reducing the hold co layer (useless expensive overhead) and blowing up all the agency silos. No more P&Ls that fight each other. Refocus to deliver what clients want. Services that are agile, specialized and seamless. And refocus to be the client advocate- something they’ve lost sight of. Having worked for IPG, Omnicom, WPP and Publicis during my career, I’ve seen that they are all alike and share the same challenge. I fear the newly merged holding co will cut everyone below them - not themselves. And they don’t understand how to design for the future given most of them don’t understand digital media or technology. What do you think? How can this merger be successful over the long term?

But the competition among measurement companies is quieter in 2024. Nielsen last year regained accreditation for its national TV measurements, which were suspended following disputes over their accuracy. That allowed competitors such as Comscore, VideoAmp, iSpot.tv and EDO an opening to push their services to the ad industry. Now the argument has returned to its familiar boundaries. Nielsen for its part has released a “big data” product combining human panel-based measurements with data from smart TVs and set-top boxes. The company previously said the big data product would be its sole measurement offering by September 2024, but a spokesman has said it would allow clients to use other methods past that date. The Video Advertising Bureau, a research and advocacy group of media companies and video advertising groups, last year called on Nielsen to fix what it saw as measurement defects in the new product.
