I love this cartoon. When speaking to association executives, I emphasize the importance of breaking down silos to become more customer- and audience-focused. As Tom Fishburne aptly puts it, "Our customers don't care about our org charts. They don't care which department is responsible for what. When they interact with different parts of a business, all they see is one brand." This point cannot be overstated - it's absolutely crucial! Breaking down silos can be a daunting proposition. However, it doesn't need to be. It does not necessarily require a complete organizational overhaul. There are many ways to connect and integrate within an association while still preserving the benefits of a more departmentally focused approach. It does not need to be an either or scenario. 51% of employees believe the workplace should remain politically neutral (my thoughts below). Today, Page Society hosted a really insightful discussion on "Navigating Elections, Culture and Polarization in the Workplace." Chris Deri from Weber Shandwick and Ben Kalevitch from United Minds shared a ton of stats on what CEOs, CFOs, CHROs, CCOs, and employees think about the topic, where they align, and where they differ. Fascinating! One of the most interesting stats was the fact that employees are almost completely split on taking a stance on politics. To me, this means #communications #corporateaffairs functions need to take the lead on using data and analytics to determine what their company should do. All the more reason to ensure you have a sophisticated communications function using metrics to make decisions!

I read PRWeek's recent article about how some brands are reducing their external Pride campaigns this year amid economic pressures and fears of backlash. As a PR recruiter, I found the piece thought-provoking on comms professionals' challenges in balancing authenticity, principles, and prudent business sense. A few takeaways: Authenticity Matters 💯 The article highlights concerns that some past Pride activations may have been more about hopping on a trend vs. truly living organizational values of LGBTQ+ inclusion. Savvy audiences can sniff out inauthenticity from a mile away. Consistency and walking the talk is key for brands. Ethics > Apprehension 💪 While I understand the trepidation some companies feel after seeing the backlash Target and others faced, pulling back LGBTQ+ support solely due to fear sets a concerning precedent. The PR profession must have the courage of its convictions. Don't Confuse Prudence with Prejudice 🕵️ At the same time, scaling back certain external Pride promotions prudently doesn't necessarily equate to prejudice if those budgets are being meaningfully reinvested in LGBTQ+ initiatives that genuinely benefit employees and communities. It's about impact over optics. Ultimately, this presents a defining moment for the PR industry to truly live its values and ethically advise organizations to do what's right - not just what's expedient. 🌈 We can celebrate LGBTQ+ identities with authenticity, backbone and nuance. For an industry built on communicating with consumers, it's remarkable how bad marketing has gotten at communicating with each other. All the layers, silos, matrices, and inter-[something]-teams that make up modern marketing organizations don't help us bridge the language barriers between our varying expertises, and the chaos has only been intensified in the hybrid working, Slackified world. We’re all in such a hurry to make our point and move on that we forget to put ourselves in the shoes of the audience.
