The National Retail Federation (NRF) announced on Tuesday that it anticipates retail sales for the upcoming holiday season (Nov. 1 to Dec. 31) to rise by 2.5% to 3.5% compared to last year’s figures, reaching approximately $980 billion to $990 billion. Last year’s holiday sales saw a 3.9% increase from the previous year, according to NRF. Jack Kleinhenz, NRF’s chief economist, explained via email that the expected slight slowdown in growth could be attributed to lower prices for consumer goods, which, while beneficial for shoppers, might reduce retailers’ revenue. While we wait for the AUG '24 sales data... Here is a snapshot of the top 20 REC markets in New Mexico. The upper right is the most opportunistic position for an operator to open a retail storefront or introduce new products: significant shopper traffic meets large basket sizes. Evaluated by these health metrics, Jal, Carlsbad, Roswell, and Hobbs were the healthiest, most opportunistic markets for operators in July '24. The least healthy markets (determined by JUL '24 REC sales performance in each of the top 20 markets and among its retailers) are Alamogordo, Anthony, Las Cruces, Bernalillo, and Los Lunas. With Sunland Park's current positioning, I believe we will see slow erosion in 2H as the basket size continues to fall, thus shifting their position to the left. I also look for reduced shopper counts in tourist-inflated summer markets like Taos and Carlsbad, shifting their positioning down. Store brands are one of the ways shoppers can save money and unlike older Gen X and Boomer generations, young Millennials and Gen Z don't have the same preconceived notions about store brand quality. In fact, many will say store brands have quality levels that rival national brands. But brands have an advantage in that their relationship is directly with the consumer regardless of the retailer. Quality, formulas and tastes are the same whether the item is bought in Los Angeles or Boston. As the price gap between national brands and premium store brands narrows, the advantage will go to the brands that know their value proposition, communicate it clearly and promote effectively.

What can we learn from Beyond Inc.'s turnaround strategy? Beyond Inc., the parent company of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock saw a significant surge in after-hours trading following a positive quarterly earnings report. Despite a net loss, Beyond Inc.'s results showed improvement, surpassing analysts' estimates and indicating a resilient performance amidst a challenging retail landscape. The company's focus on reviving its brands and expanding its customer base has garnered investor confidence, leading to a 7.8% increase in stock price after hours. While facing challenges in re-establishing the Overstock brand, Beyond Inc. has made significant progress in reducing costs and exploring strategic partnerships. Successfully reestablishing Overstock will be crucial to the company's overall success, highlighting the importance of adaptability and strategic execution in navigating retail challenges.

I recently discovered Walmart's Walmarche concept, and am eager to see how it performs. Recently, Diane Von Furstenberg launched an exclusive collection of 200 clothing, baby, and household items at Target, priced between $5 to $50. This collaboration is part of Target's exclusive partnerships with designers, providing consumers affordable access to otherwise high-end collections. Target's online and in-store presence has been a successful distribution channel for renowned designers like Alexander McQueen and Jason Wu. Walmart is now following a similar strategy with its Walmarche concept, aiming to attract high-income shoppers by offering upscale products at lower prices. This move, which includes a pilot merchandise mix and the introduction of high-end food options, seems vital as Walmart faces competition from Amazon and a decline in its share of retail spending. Amid shifting consumer spending patterns and the increasing popularity of affordable fashion and home furnishing options, Walmart is trying to appeal to a broader consumer base and regain lost ground against Amazon. The company's focus on attracting higher-income consumers and expanding into new product categories reflects its response to changing market dynamics and evolving consumer preferences.
