One question I constantly get asked is, “What does the future of retail look like?” There is no better example of this than our remodeled Sam’s Club in Grapevine, Texas. In this club, we are using technology to enhance our members and associates’ experiences in new ways. Where registers once stood, Scan & Go offers a simple and intuitive way for members to scan items on their phone through the Sam’s Club app, add them to their cart and pay before heading out the door. And instead of queuing in lines for a receipt check, our exit technology combines AI and computer vision to scan items as members leave the club to automatically verify purchases. This solution is enabling 75% of members to exit the club friction-free. All of these innovations allow our associates to have more time focusing on what matters most: enhancing the member experience. So great to hear! For stores to thrive, they have got to become centered around the experience. If I just want some consumer packaged good, I can order from Walmart.com. But I can’t get the smells and colors and advice from a top butcher or fish monger online. This is what stores must become.
