Is the playbook for designing an effective contingent workforce program outdated? I think so and excited for next week's ClubVMSA roundtable to share some of my thinking as to why. I'll be riding Kobie Wagener, MSOD, SHRM-CP's coattails throughout the conversation and trying to look smart by association. Kobie and I spent some time working on this over the weekend and we've got some interesting (and maybe controversial?) ideas to pose. One thing I'm particularly excited to talk through is how Program Managers can get better at leveraging their spend, understanding the most & least valuable types of spend (in terms of margin profile), and how to make sure they're giving their "best" spend to partners that can solve their biggest problems. I think this is an under-discussed issue in our industry right now and one that'll just become more pressing as more spend moves abroad towards SOW. For years, MSPs have been treating their MSP business as a loss leader** to help them get to higher margin payroll/EOR or staffing business. What happens to that model if there's less US staff aug spend and way more SOW spend? I think we're seeing that right now, and there are hundreds of mid-sized programs that can't actually incentivize their MSP to support them the way they need given how they spend their spend. ** Not necessarily a literal loss, but you get the gist.

I've been reflecting on SHRM's recent decision to rebrand Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) to "Inclusion and Diversity" (ID). Here are my thoughts... DE&I has been in the spotlight (rightfully so) a lot over recent years, but the reality is many of these programs haven't had the lasting impact hoped for. In fact, a study by McKinsey shows that only 39% of companies have seen real progress with their diversity and inclusion goals. I'm hopeful this rebrand will bring a fresh focus and drive real, systemic change. SHRM is NSFW HR is having an existential crisis right now...and it's about time! The world of work is evolving rapidly, and HR needs to evolve with it. We're at a crossroads where modern HR is challenging traditional HR. 💣 Yesterday, SHRM announced that they are removing the 'E' for equity in DEIB efforts. 💣 Last week, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP was raked through the coals for his keynote speech at the SHRM conference (as he should have been). BUT... this BS has been happening for years and frankly, it needs to end now. I am a modern HR Leader who understands that HR can only be successful when: 🏆 You are in service to your people. 🏆 When you can see the value in Equity. 🏆 When you understand that the community you're building is for us, not for you and your ego. Here's to hoping we see major changes soon at SHRM. Until then, I'll continue to post my opposition to this antiquated Leadership and I'll keep my certifications fresh with HRCI.
