Really exciting news out of the Oracle Healthcare Summit in the US this week. Oracle Healthcare is promising a new #EMR “built from the ground up” to be released in 2025 and embedding #AI across the entire clinical workflow. Seema Verma told the conference that the new platform was not “a refurbished EHR”, saying that “in this day and age, you can’t leverage modern technology by bolting new innovation to something built in the 1990s”. This is spot on and what many in the #digitalhealth community have been saying for some time. We need a #nextgenEMR designed to embed AI across the whole workflow with modern tools for automation, documentation, and tasking that uses conversational AI to navigate and create tasks and documentation, to drive down the #clinicianburnout. 100% agree with her statement: “One of today’s most important and widely used healthcare technologies, the EHR, has not lived up to its promise.'' Meanwhile post the 21st Century Cures Act in the US , this is the progress they are making on health data exchange. #interoperability #fhir TEFCA’s goal is to create a flexible structure that enables stakeholders – ambulatory practices, hospitals, health centers, payers, HIT developers, federal government agencies, public health agencies and individuals – to benefit through improved access to health information by creating a network of networks across which the QHINs would facilitate the sharing of relevant information.

This is an interesting article because EHR companies, like Epic and Oracle's Cerner, have made siloing data a major part of their business model. Overall, I like EPIC’s ability to review records from other EPIC shops. It also has a nod to interoperability with its “Care Everywhere“ feature. However, this is often a disorganized and outdated collection of information. Using it requires a ninja level of both tech expertise and medical knowledge possessed mainly by younger physicians and chief residents. I am a fan (and advisor) of companies like Zus Health focused on user-friendly, comprehensive, and up-to-date interoperable health care data tools.

This is a must-read article on the future of #EMRs. I feel like disruption is long overdue and an exciting future is on the horizon for healthcare. Here are a few excerpts: "Health care has long been Big Technology’s great white whale. Apple, Amazon and Google parent Alphabet Inc. — all #innovators that have been unquestionably dominant in their respective main businesses — have each spent billions trying to disrupt the industry, only to scale back their ambitions when faced with the complexity and power of the established US medical system." While Oracle’s long-term vision for modernizing #HealthInformationTechnology is compelling, and has the potential to positively affect patient care, the company has faced significant setbacks — much like its technology peers. Oracle has ribbed Epic for being too expensive and running on a database it calls archaic and insecure. Epic, in particular, likes to brag about retention. One of the most popular presentation slides at the company is blank and titled “Customers Which Have Switched From Epic to Cerner,” “Since Oracle’s acquisition of Cerner Corporation, it’s been heads down to create this vision...
