Stripping jargon from your media interview or panel prep isn't dumbing down. It's wising up because you are removing ambiguity of understanding for the non-experts in the audience. Or, to put it another way, do you want to leave it up to someone else to decide for themselves what you mean? Or just ignore you altogether because they don't understand? If you are talking to the media to reach the five people who know as much about the topic to you, you picked the wrong conduit.

Hiring a PR Firm and having them execute a strong PR campaign on your behalf is kind of like handing over the car keys to your teenager for the first time. Before he or she can go out on the open road, they need to practice, prepare and plan, for you to feel confident. Without a doubt, this is the secret sauce. Don't hand the keys over to someone who doesn't know how to drive.

Does your PR team know how to explain the work we do? In too many instances, asking different members of your team how to explain public relations may bring many different answers. The obvious problem with that is that it creates confusion. As we all already know, too many people already don't get what we do. It is less about saying the exact words but more about general cohesion of the story. If your agency hasn't gone through this exercise with your team, it is something to think about.

Journalists are spilling the tea about what they like and don't like. Frank Strong of The Sword and the Script shared the results of a recent Cision survey. He pulled the stats that PR pros need to know about to improve their odds of success. 42% of reporters say credibility is the top challenge facing journalism. Tip: Avoid adjectives and hyperbole when you pitch. 67% of journalists use social media to source information. Tip: Keep your social feeds active and relevant. 55% of journalists want exclusives. I find myself saying this more and more everyday. We need to "humanize" our writing. I love tools like ChatGPT and the others. They're designed to make our lives easier, and if I'm being honest, 7 out of 10 times I use it for inspiration, to help get me unstuck, or to give me a baseline that I can work with. Every single time, I go in and rewrite, or rework what the tech spits out. We your readers, or listeners can tell when something is generated by AI. Even worse, some persons don't feed detailed instructions to the technology, so the writing is vague and "robotic". AI doesn't replace the human elements needed in your messaging. So don't just get ChatGPT to do it. Whether on social media, your press releases, speeches, etc. it needs the human touch. ✍.

PR pros often ask me or talk amongst themselves about when to pitch. Are Mondays OK. Will anyone read on Fridays. Will my pitch always be accepted if I send it at 11:11 on a Wednesday and make a wish. With few common-sense exceptions (avoid holidays, weekends and the afternoons of the days before those), I don't think you need to worry about it. Every reporter has their own rhythms in their work and their personal life and PTO. You're never going to know it all. I don't even know it all and it's my life. Focus more on the content of your pitch and the recipient of your pitch than the time. You'll have better results 100% of the time. Promise.

Meet one of our many #PR clients: Carve. The old adage is that PR firms are terrible at doing PR for themselves. All of our energy is spent on our clients.
