Nothing is evolving faster than AI--or not? 🤨 Georgiana Cohen's spot-on article about #AIcontent in higher ed is nearly two years old (!!!) and still valuable and accurate. The age and the fact that it's still relevant is less a matter of evergreen commentary (though of course, you should always get your structure and #contentstrategy in order before training new people and systems on it!) and more a big head-scratching disconnect about #AI tools that promise so much, and still ask us to settle for less. Rachel Baron of AsiaEdit recently published results of their extensive testing of generative AI tools for editing. In short, they found (not surprisingly) that neither chat-based tools like ChatGPT nor tailored tools integrated into Word were fit for editing without substantial human intervention and verification. Yep, regulators are coming for AI. But is this really the right bill? Should AI companies be responsible for how people use their tools? This might be too heavy handed, and amplify the risk falling behind other locales with more lenient restrictions. While I think AI regulation is definitely needed, I'm not sure this is the right approach... But we'll see what happens! **Governor Newsom's Decision on California AI Safety Bill SB 1047** Governor Gavin Newsom faces a critical decision regarding the AI Safety Bill, SB 1047, proposed by Senator Scott Weiner, intended to regulate California's AI industry. The bill, which passed the State Senate with a 29-9 vote, mandates that by January 2025, tech companies submit safety reports on their AI models. A nine-member 'Board of Frontier Models' will review these reports and advise the attorney general, who could then stop the development of dangerous AI models. While big tech companies like OpenAI believe the bill could hinder innovation and drive talent away, proponents like Elon Musk argue it's essential for regulating the fast-paced AI sector. The new regulatory framework aims to enhance safety, prevent harmful AI events, and could serve as a model for other regions. Potential business opportunities include consultancy services for compliance, software for automating safety processes, and audit startups. The challenge lies in balancing innovation with safety. Newsom's decision is awaited by September 30th.
