It's already been two weeks of trying to make this work, but this is so awesome! The Brandon Herrera video of the AK50 mainly inspired this gun... I know it is not perfect yet but it is working and I am soo happy about that😁😁😁!!! The AR Rack mechanic and the 2-handed holding mechanic were easy things to get working. The most I suffered was to get the magazine attached to the gun, and working fine. Finally, my brain began to fry with logic: if the weapon is racked, the bullet should move into the gun, and if we rack again, the bullet should come out of the gun and get replaced by another bullet. Honestly, I have to make another gun, which has to be added to the game. Each step presented some challenges within itself here or there, but overcoming them has been gratifying. Now that I’ve got the basic mechanics functioning, I can move forward with developing more complex features. I’m excited to work on the next phase and see how it enhances the overall experience.

Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red! Are proprietary engines going out fashion? 🤔 For those who have worked on both proprietary engines and Unreal, what have you found to be the key advantages of working with Unreal? #gamedev #unreal #halo

A few quick tips for your demo reel and/or static portfolio: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 with short text captions to reference what you did in the shot and what project it was from. 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 that you used to create the work in words. Don’t just put logos to represent the software you used. Not all recruiters come from an artist's background and know what the logos are referring to. A lot of recruiters use Boolean searches to look for talent (a type of word search). A Boolean search isn’t going to read a logo! For multi-person projects, specifically, 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫. For example, in an animated demo reel, if you’re able to grey out the parts you were not responsible for and keep your own animated parts in color that is helpful to the viewer to distinguish what is yours and what is not. #artrecruiter #portfolioadvice #helpfultips #quicktips #portfoliotips #videogamejobhunt #jobhunting

They say opposites attract. But yin and yang can be boring. Think about the 70:30 rule when preparing pieces for your portfolio. Details are good, but too many details in a scene can be overwhelming. The work can become disorienting and unfocused. 70% Open - free space to let your eyes rest 30% Detail - focusable detail. An example of this could be in hard surface modeling. While maintaining detail within the asset, you want the model to be as readable as possible. However, don’t just think of this within the mesh of the asset. This rule can also apply to the texture, color, and composition of the piece as well as many other aspects of the piece such as lighting and shapes. Of course, rules can be 𝑏𝑟𝑜𝑘𝑒𝑛 but if you break them, do it well and with intention.

It's live on the schedule! We're back with the Diversity in Game Audio Roundtable at GDC 2025! 🎉 After a great turnout last year, we've expanded to three days and brought on some additional wonderful hosts. We left last year's roundtable with a clear message: people want to be having these conversations and they want to figure out actionable steps to addressing the disconnect in the hiring pipeline. It was so encouraging to see people from across experience levels, from new grads to those in hiring positions, show up last year and share their experiences. We want to recreate the same honest discussion, but dig a little deeper this year. So, if you make audio, join us! If you hire audio talent, join us! It's through this dialogue that we're going to figure out the work that needs to be done. Such a sad situation for Arkane Studios Austin. No team deserves to be shutdown like this. I played a lot of Redfall and enjoyed it. This isn't all corporate greed and stock prices; we as fans have a role in this as well. I'm not saying that we shouldn't critique or call out unkept promises during development. Far too often when we criticize, we lose the human element behind these large projects. Those at Arkane, Bethesda Game Studios, タンゴゲームワークス（Tango Gameworks）, this is not your fault. This situation does not define you or your talents. Move forward when you are ready, and let's help you find your new home. Hello! ✨ It’s been a while since I’ve shared any artwork, so here’s a piece I worked on during my time at BCIT! Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/g54qeYm2 I wanted to learn more about Houdini’s muscle system, but since I didn’t have actual muscle geometry to work with, I explored how to simulate muscles without them. So here’s my muscle without actual muscle piece. 💪🏼 It was quite the challenge, but I ended up learning a lot and became much more comfortable with Houdini overall. One of the most helpful resources for me was Houdini’s documentation, which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/grF_cBQP I learned a little bit about every node involved, and ended up with a result that I think it’s a good place to start from. For the texturing, I collaborated with John Santana, as I wished to create a homage of the cartoons I liked (and still like) as a kid. Fun fact: the muscular arm is a nod to Johnny Bravo. Overall, lots of learning and room for improvements, but I’m happy with how it turned out as an introduction to Houdini’s muscle system. Now back to learning! 🤓

Hippity Happy Monday! Another week, ANOTHER JOB! Do you like Gameplay AI? Are you Crazy for Creatures? Mad for Mobs!? I don't have any more alliterations in me right now, but we're looking for someone to create believable creature behaviors for our game. If you've seen any of the nature docs and ever thought that it would be awesome to somehow make one within a brand new universe (specific dream, I know), then this might be for you! This is a mid-level (3-6 yrs) role, but if you have a couple years of professional dev in C++ and Unreal games, and have a genuine love and desire to learn gameplay AI we could chat too. What we can't train up is the very solid use of C++ and dev experience in Unreal. Sorry Unity-only folks, we really need someone w/ some prior experience here. Just like I said in my last post I will read every app and cover letter, but please only write a cover letter if you think it has something your resume couldn't tell. I do not prioritize folks that have one vs not. One thing I'd love to see in that section is any work you've done with creature AI behaviors if you got any. Anyway, gl;hf! 🎮 Want a job in the video game industry? 🎮 Begin with the end in mind.* ➡ When you drive to work do you just turn left or right based on how you feel that day? 😅 (I hope you left extra early that day) ➡ When you gather data for a project, do you grab monthly active users, popular breakfast items and breeds of dog? 🤐 (This report might be fun but your boss will not be happy) ➡ When you schedule a doctor appointment, do you call random numbers in the phone book? 🙃 The same applies to...well...applying for jobs. ❔ Do you look at the minimum requirements for a job or do you click easy apply on cool titles? (Although, I might as well shoot my shot for Game Director) ❔ Do you update your resume with your most relevant experience when you apply? What is your desired outcome? Work backwards and you'll see at least some of the steps in a path to get there. This is not easy to do, because there is no perfect way to be the best fit for a job. Everyone's journey is different.
