Last month at the Washington State IT Industry Forum & Modernization Summit, an WA State organization grappled with the challenge of streamlining intake and reporting processes. Fellow in-house taxonomists, ontologists, metadata managers, and semantic wizards: what is the name of the team or business unit that you work within? I have the good fortune of getting to rename the "Content Standards" program I lead at Kaiser Permanente IT. My team has determined that the name is too vague to convey the core activities of the program, and leads to confusion with the cross-functional teams we collaborate with. I'm looking for a clear name that will resonate with stakeholders within my org. So I've got a very classic taxonomist question: What to call the program? 🤔 For some context... What my program is responsible for: - Defining and governing standards for metadata, structured data, taxonomy, and ontology for classifying/structuring digital content - Implementing processes and platforms to good metadata hygiene - Assessment and remediation of content metadata What my program doesn't cover: - Writing or editorial style guides - Content design - Content strategy - Site maps or navigational structure - Data governance Any ideas are most welcome!

Tonight’s inspiration comes from Todd McGee’s recent shoutout to Jez Humble’s Accelerate. Todd’s post brought back memories of a talk I caught by Jez at a conference organized by Peter Bell, where he unpacked years of hands-on DevOps research that hit hard. Accelerate isn’t just another tech book—it’s a call to rethink how we build teams and systems that don’t just survive change but embrace it. Jez’s book and talk break down the magic of high-performing teams: it’s about more than hitting metrics; it’s about building culture, trust, and resilience into the core of what we do. Jez reminded us that DevOps, at its heart, is a philosophy—it’s a culture that prioritizes learning, leanness, and precision. Last Sunday I had the opportunity to participate in the Ironman California race. For those not familiar with Ironman they include a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride and finishing with a 26.2 mile run. The Ironman race tests you not only physically but just as much mentally. I had a great day and finished with a time of 12 hour and 2 minutes. That is 2 hours faster than my last Ironman race. But race times don't really matter. What matters most is the growth that comes from the journey...not the race. Business and life lessons from the training from this year include advice given to me by my triathlon coach right before the race. "Solve problems one at a time." Through the course of a long race there will be problems. Stay present and solve them one at a time. The more present you can be the more effective you will be at solving what is right in front of you. There was a day that the idea of doing a race that lasts 140.6 miles in one day I would have thought impossible. Completing an Ironman is the realization that each of us are capable of more than we could imagine. My wish in posting this is to inspire anyone chasing a dream. It can be done if focus on achieving your goals one step at a time. Solve the challenges that stand in your way one at a time!!!!

Non-Tech post for a change: Late June / Early July at Snowflake we had an employee survey and a short while later a follow up survey. I have to admit, I rolled my eyes a bit. I've been a working professional for 20+ yrs and have seen this song and dance many times before and it's always felt like talking to a wall or yelling at a cloud. My colleagues and I raised issues around slow expense reimbursement, terrible travel booking software, lack of a clear definition of job levels and expectations, lack of clarity on annual salary reviews, and more. All stuff I have seen at many previous employers who came back with half hearted attempts to "fix" issues a survey uncovered. Wow, was I wrong! Almost immediately changes started happening. Expense approval was cleaned up, travel booking was moved to a different vendor, career ladders were rolled out to everyone.. changes are still rolling out. Its not even 6 months after the survey and most of the items have been addressed. I am honestly AMAZED, Snowflake is a big company compared to most I have worked for and they knocked out these issues insanely fast <insert brain exploding icon here>. For all involved in responding to the results of the survey: wow, and thank you! I will never roll my eyes at employee surveys again. #Snowflake #ILoveItHere
