☕ Espresso: Shared Sequencers for Seamless Layer-2 Scaling ⛓⛓ Layer-2 (L2) solutions, such as rollups, have emerged as a vital tool for scaling Ethereum by handling transaction execution off-chain while maintaining the security of the Ethereum mainnet (Layer-1). Rollups provide users with significant benefits, including low latency, high throughput, quick confirmations, and reduced gas fees. However, these advantages come with certain trade-offs. 🚧 Challenges with Current Rollup Solutions: Centralization of Sequencers: ▶ Currently, most L2 rollups rely on centralized sequencers, which, while efficient, introduce potential vulnerabilities such as liveness issues and the risk of censorship. ▶ If a centralized sequencer fails or is compromised, the entire rollup could face operational challenges, potentially leaving users unable to transact. Interoperability Issues: ▶ Rollups, by design, do not naturally interoperate with each other, leading to fragmentation in user bases and liquidity pools 🌐 The Role of Shared Sequencers To address these challenges, the concept of shared sequencers has been introduced, with providers like Espresso playing a crucial role. Model Context Protocol, or MCP for short ostensibly solves this problem through a protocol that enables developers to build two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications. Developers can expose data through “MCP servers” and build “MCP clients”, for instance, apps and workflows — that connect to those servers on command.
