A Convoy Radio Frequency Jammer is a specialized technology used to disrupt radio signals across a broad range of frequencies. Its main function is to interfere with all forms of communication that rely on radio waves, such as mobile phone signals, Wi-Fi, and GPS. This technology is crucial for protecting high-profile convoys, like a presidential motorcade, by preventing unauthorized or potentially dangerous communications that could be used to coordinate attacks or track the convoy's movements. The system consists of multiple Electronic Countermeasure (ECM) jammers, which are strategically placed on various vehicles within the convoy. These jammers emit signals that create a field of interference, effectively blocking any radio communications within the covered area. By distributing these jammers across several vehicles, the convoy ensures a wide coverage area, making it nearly impossible for external signals to penetrate or disrupt the convoy's secure operations. When a convoy equipped with this technology passes through an area, the impact on civilian communications is noticeable. Mobile phones and internet connections via cellular networks often become unusable because the jammers are actively blocking these signals. This creates a temporary communication blackout, ensuring that no external communications can interfere with or pose a threat to the convoy, thereby maintaining the safety and security of the individuals being protected.

Quick follow up on Skydio Ascend: UAS Nexus has roots in #DFR back in 2018, (~ 5 years before Skydio), and have since engaged with nearly *every* DFR provider in this space - so hear me out on this. This is an industry where DJI (for now) is still king and since Skydio can #derisk by cutting their losses on the #defense side of the business and reapply *a lot* of that #technology to #publicsafety. Here is the problem: #DFR is crowded AF and not profitable. New platform goes head to head with DroneSense, Inc. and others - none of which are profitable yet. There’s a false perception that this is low hanging fruit, and lawdddd this is going to have some serious consequences if the execution is not exceptional. One other point that often goes overlooked: Skydio has a huge culture war within the company. 👀🫣 Just do a LinkedIn search and take the time to read the profiles of their hundreds of employees: outside of the few dozen defense or former law-enforcement, these people are pure Bay Area tech - #military and #police just don’t jive with the #culture. I think that’s why Skydio was so reluctant to eventually add #lethality to their platform - I bet there was a lot of internal pushback. It’s just not in the DNA of the company or the founders, and I’m totally OK with that. Still probably the best bridge inspection tool on the market, because nobody had any problems making sure that feature was absolutely perfect…

Day 1 Commercial UAV Show #UAVEXPO takeaways: 1) #tradeshows are important. Many of us do weeks/months worth of business in a few days. Truly industry defining conversations and deals. Having them in LV is not. Perhaps another location? 2) Nothing wildly game changing announced. Please correct me if I’m wrong. We did however have some product launches, like the ACSL Inc. #soten with the new Teledyne FLIR payload. 3) Two definitive camps in this industry: #aviation and #technologists or #hobbyists. One was losing for years and now has the upper hand and is 10-50x better funded than the others. Game on, fam.

My #unfiltered take on the State of the Commercial #UAS industry – while there is value (present and future), we have a long/painful way to go before the industry figures itself out. None of my opinions are directed at any one individual/company...just my own general thoughts.   A full $0.02 exceeds a LI character limit. So here is my $0.01: UAS/Hardware/Software manufacturers 🚁🕹️💻 : Many of you are making great strides in the #innovation aspects of your products, kudos to you. It’s becoming harder to weed you out from your competitors though. It’s one thing to brand yourself product as a Swiss-army knife. It’s a completely different thing to say your Swiss Army knife is bullet proof, only to find out that under the hood, it’s made of #3D printed plastic. Drone Service Providers (DSPs)🚧📋: You’re trying to juggle #industry resources, conflicting industry reports, a challenging #economy , #customer demands (race-to-bottom pricing), and #differentiation . All while trying to manage the idea of your customers taking on flight services internally (effectively cutting you out). #Regulatory State ⚖️: Whether you are for or against the CCP regulations, & whether or not it is completely passed, it is going to affect all of us in some way. I see both sides of the issue. Both sides can (and should) stand up as tax paying citizens and have their voices heard. But at the end of the day, #politicians are going to play #politics . You should have bravo, charlie, & delta plans for each scenario. #Conference Organizers 🏟️: You need to #innovate . The days of nail-biting keynotes with flashy product reveals have come and gone (hopefully not forever). I think you will always have a core group of attendees that can stomach the expensive travel budgets (mainly to network). But right now it’s the same people, with the same breakout sessions, and generally the same tech, every year. That core group is dwindling. If we are going to sacrifice time away from our family’s, let’s get back to when conferences were exciting. End-users/customers of DSPs 🏭:        End-users have been accustomed to this idea that DSPs provide a safer (or alternative) solution to solve a problem. Generally, this is true. But when end-users buy into some of the misconceptions about things like pricing, availability, capacity, and demand, the only underlying KPI that matters is direct cost. If your organization is using a contracted model for UAS services, I think there needs to be a stronger emphasis on the relationships with your contractors (and supporting them). When a customer puts so much pressure on pricing, you’re backing legitimate DSPs into a corner where #safety and #integrity are compromised. No one #wins here. Moral of my story 💡 :     Buckle up and be ready for whatever this crazy world is ready to throw at us next. The commercial UAS industry is here to stay. What will the industry look like in the near (or long-term) future? No one truly knows.

Last week I attended the Commercial UAV News Expo for the 5th time as a part of Fruity Chutes Inc. | Drone Parachute Recovery and Recovery for other UAS. It was such a blast catching up with everyone and seeing the advancements in our industry. I came back with 4 main takeaways: 1. “Start small & stay small” — This was a theme in the keynote from day one. The message here is to build your foundation before taking funding. Innovate your product, test it out in the market, see how it does, and then slowly scale based on the results. Don’t jump into funding too soon–stick with self-funding until you KNOW you can scale with the pressure of funding. 2. Refinement of target customer sector — Many of the companies I spoke with shared that the sector of their target customer has shifted in the last few years. For example cinematography has taken a back seat with mapping and surveying taking a prominent front seat. 3. Less innovation, more full production — Over the last few years I’ve noticed more and more drone manufacturers at CUAVE officially leave the innovation stage and go into full production (and at high volumes too!) 4. The passion just keeps growing — So many people stopped me on the show floor, with great excitement, to share with me what they have been up to in the last year. They shared their advancements, discoveries, ideas, and more. This is such an amazing industry to be a part of. I never thought my career would lead me into the tech world (I was a musical theatre major afterall 😂) BUT I am so glad it did. Witnessing the strides in advancement each year is inspiring. The drone industry has AND will continue to make an impact on the world, and I am so honored to be a part of that. #expouav #dronesaregood #multicopter #UAV #droneshow #UAS

In a recent DroneLife article, the call for unity in our industry couldn't have been more timely—or necessary. As drone pilots, innovators, and industry leaders, we find ourselves at a crossroads where collaboration, not division, will determine our future. It’s time to lay down our swords and come together to tackle the macro challenges we all face. The gaslighting and dismissing of others' perspectives has to end. We don’t need to agree on every point, but we must respect each other and move forward with shared goals. To borrow from President Eisenhower: “Plans are nothing; planning is everything.” In this industry, collective planning and problem-solving are what will define our success—not isolated endeavors. At the end of the day, a rising tide lifts all boats. If we can harness the collective expertise, innovation, and determination within this community, the potential for growth is limitless. Looking for some compelling examples of medical tech delivery by drones. In a 2018 article published by Mesar, Lessig, and LTC King in J Spec Oper Med, a proof of concept study was conducted to compare the efficiency of drone delivery with that of delivery by foot and vehicle (assuming roads are available) for medical supplies. As often is the case, Special Ops leads the testing/incorporation of technology like this, particularly when it involves supporting extended field care or prolonged casualty care (PFC/PCC), and when immediate evacuation isn't a possibility. Some other ways drones for medical delivery: - Recent webinar had an application for a Ukraine clinical trial of drone delivery of blood products. - Zipline is delivering medical supplies internationally with >38 million miles covered. Experimentation/challenges by DoD components could potentially serve as an excellent method to gauge the feasibility and demonstrate the utility of drone delivery for advanced medtech or biopharma products. Hoping to seeing more requests for information and proposals pertaining to this approach for DoD for international support of PFC/PCC.
