The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) today highlighted the need to redouble the focus on attracting the next generation of industry professionals as a national priority, and urged Congress to ensure that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) effectively implements plans contained in the agency’s newly enacted reauthorization to build a workforce that preserves America’s global aviation leadership. An emphasis on promoting workforce-development initiatives was the central theme in testimony provided by Jo Damato, CAM, senior vice president of education, training and workforce development with NBAA, before a hearing convened by the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure’s Aviation Subcommittee. “This hearing highlights the importance of recruiting, retaining and engaging aviation talent, and underscores the work that must be energized” to ensure a large, qualified and diverse cohort of industry professionals is equipped to lead the industry in the years ahead, Damato said. She noted that the issue is a top concern for business aviation, which supports 1.2 million U.S. jobs and $247 billion in economic output. #Boeing Boeing has committed to implementing design changes across its 737 Max fleet within 12 months following a mid-air incident in which a door panel blew out on an Alaska Airlines flight. Elisabeth Lund, Boeing’s Senior Vice President for Quality, testified before the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), revealing that engineers are working on modifications to prevent doors from closing unless properly bolted. This commitment comes as investigators released 3,800 pages of documents related to the January incident, highlighting the rushed and pressured environment in which the plane was completed. The NTSB’s investigation determined that the door plug on the Alaska Airlines flight was missing four bolts, which caused the panel to blow off at 16,000 feet, depressurizing the cabin and forcing an emergency landing. Boeing acknowledged that no documentation exists to explain the removal of these bolts, a lapse attributed to low morale, high staff turnover, and poor communication between Boeing and its supplier, Spirit AeroSystems. The testimony also revealed that Boeing employees were under intense pressure, leading to hasty repairs and overlooked safety procedures. The incident has underscored ongoing concerns about Boeing’s safety culture, with NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy expressing the need for significant improvements. The traumatic experience for the 171 passengers and six crew members aboard the Alaska Airlines flight was detailed in the released documents, with flight attendants recalling the chaos and fear that ensued after the door panel's blowout. The incident further damages Boeing's reputation, already tarnished by two fatal 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in Boeing facing criminal and regulatory scrutiny. In addition to the design changes, Boeing is also dealing with the repercussions of its safety failures, including a guilty plea to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and a settlement of up to $487 million in fines related to the crashes. The leadership shakeup continues as Dave Calhoun steps down as CEO, with Kelly Ortberg set to take over. By December 2023, demand for air travel was back to 97 percent of prepandemic levels, and it’s expected to grow between 5 and 10 percent annually through 2026.1 New aircraft orders now total about 15,700.2 The open-order backlog would take 13 years to address, assuming 2023 delivery rates.

#LOA24: Global Collaboration | Five Eyes | Interoperability At the Logistics Officer Association Symposium (LOA24) in St. Louis this past March, I had the privilege of meeting with Air Vice-Marshal Shaun Harris CBE from the United Kingdom Royal Air Force (RAF). Our discussion was a powerful reminder of the strength and potential within our allied countries. The combined capabilities of these strategic allies are formidable, yet our conversation emphasized an equally crucial element: the importance of building relationships, understanding one another, and gathering often to build trust. A key sentiment was, we cannot solely rely on our combined assets to lead us to prosperity. We must gather, break bread, train together, integrate resources, and share lived experiences together to achieve our full integrated potential. Building these relationships is essential, as trust formed in peacetime ensures seamless collaboration when we may find ourselves in the future fight together. Moreover, interoperability is crucial when combining resources. Ensuring our systems, processes, and teams can work together smoothly enhances our collective strength and effectiveness on the global stage. Maj Gen Jeff King, on the allies and partners panel, emphasized the importance of industry partner's collaboration to ensure equipment interoperability to seamlessly drive integrated deterrence. The Aviation Supply Chain Integrity Coalition has released its report outlining the steps the industry can take to prevent unapproved parts from entering the aviation supply chain. Although we were able to quickly ringfence AOG Technics last year, we have a responsibility to prevent this from happening again. The coalition’s three categories of recommended actions show us the way forward. GE Aerospace is committed to the work ahead and will support others across the industry to implement these recommendations. GE Aerospace has digitized 18 million MRO records, and when an engine has maintenance performed, key paperwork is digitized and verified by AI. Later this year, we will pilot digital signatures. A big thank you to our partners on this coalition from Airbus, American Airlines, Boeing, Delta Air Lines, Safran, StandardAero, and United Airlines. I'm going to predict something here - I'm seeing more indications that boards of directors are moving away from finance-oriented CEOs and towards those with more engineering and technical experience. I believe this will be a driving trend for the next several years. There are a few reasons I believe this. First of all, the news cycle lately seems to be awash with companies that are failing because they've put profits ahead of research, safety, security, and infrastructure, all things that were key to making these companies competitive in the first place. This decline in engineering quality translates directly to lost sales, dissatisfied customers, and increased regulation (with hefty fines). Additionally, there's a generational change occurring as those born in the 1960s increasingly are making their way to the helm of these companies even as existing executives, brought up primarily in the sales and financial world, are retiring. This cohort, in general, is much more engineering and technically focused, meaning that they have an understanding of the underlying product in a way that salespeople usually don't - and are much less likely to cut corners because of it.
