Our team has been studying the uptick in organizations adopting, or thinking about adopting, a consumption-based revenue model for a while now. That research has included talking with many industry leaders (especially on the Infrastructure-as-a-service side) about how they do it. We've also worked closely with customers to understand their challenges better and to figure how what goes into to successfully running a business with this model. * A quick aside *: That effort fueled our investment in building consumption-based forecasting (CBF) capabilities (the first ever I should add) into our platform. But what I've observed is that this trend is increasingly NOT just limited to IaaS companies. More and more SaaS org’s are figuring out the value, especially for their customers. Justin Shriber, our CEO, captured the fundamentals from our research in the below white paper. Here's a short snippet: “Consumers recognize the equity in paying for what they use. Additionally, they may view utilization rates as a tangible proxy for the value they're receiving. Meanwhile, vendors find that consumption-based models provide an easy way to attract and ramp lucrative new customers via "land and expand" tactics. “Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) companies, for example, have become extremely adept at transforming small initial transactions into multi-million dollar revenue streams.” When done right, organizations are remarkably accurate with their projections, more disciplined with data, and more proactive with customer relationships. My column in MarTech published yesterday. The predictions are grounded in years of C-suite interviews and associated data. Like all predictions, even if they’re directionally correct they may take longer to manifest. That said, it is clear that we have reached a point of crisis in B2B GTM. The definition of “crisis” is a moment from which things can get better or very much worse. That applies here. None of us like moments of crisis. They represent fundamental instability, and the threat of unwelcome change. However, with the right responses, crises are also huge opportunities. I believe that we stand on the threshold of a golden era in GTM, but we all have to choose to do what’s necessary to realize it. What’s on the table from the CEOs and CFOs I spoke to is a demand for a common rule book on navigating, forecasting, optimizing, and correcting GTM spend and operations. Without this, the present dysfunctions will only deepen. The executives I interviewed said a number of things very clearly and consistently. A big takeaway was the dissolution of confidence and trust in their Marketing and Sales functions. The question of “who’s right, and who’s wrong” will need attention, but the main objective is repairing one of the most important relationships in business today.

However, the reality is quite different. With the abundance of noise and a lack of proven use cases that demonstrate real impact, FOMU has become a significant challenge. I recall one AI project where the customer conducted an extensive pilot over several months, collected a wealth of data, and yet concluded that they had no clear path forward—even though the data highlighted critical operational gaps. Attempts to bring in experts to act on the findings didn’t gain traction. Looking back, it’s clear we were battling indecision.
