“𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁” I love this quote from Bernard Bass, a leadership and organizational behavior scholar, and I use it at the beginning of my leadership speeches and programs. As a practitioner, rather than an academic, I find it useful to look at the components of leadership that can be developed. You can't lead others unless you first lead yourself, so effective leadership starts with self-leadership. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 is developed through self-awareness, self-regulation (self-discipline and motivation), and self-learning. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 requires presence, and 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 is the ability to project confidence, gravitas, and poise under pressure. Executive presence is not a set of tips and tricks but the result of doing the work to be authentic and communicate assertively. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 is the term I use for stakeholder management. Influence is a currency and in my coaching and programs, I show my participants how to 'read the room' to identify the needs, wants, and beliefs of those whom they choose to lead. With these 3 components, we find a leadership definition that can be human while delivering results: "𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀."
