Storytelling is a powerful strategy tool. I recently co-facilitated an online learning session with fellow IAF member John Kingsley Cornwell. It was one of several sessions within the IAF’s Global Learning Series which explore the 6 Core Competencies of professional facilitators. John and I created a very simple session design for the two-hour workshop. The main tool was storytelling: sharing stories and experiences as a means to learn from each other. It was immensely successful. When the time was up, no one wanted it to end! That is the power of storytelling. Storytelling goes beyond mere public speaking; it is a tool to inspire, motivate, and enhance learning. Stories are a means to convey messages, values, and experiences, fostering engagement and connection among people. The human brain gravitates towards simplicity, and stories provide a sense-making instrument by simplifying complex ideas and details. When information is clear and orderly, our brains find it easier to process and remember, making storytelling a powerful communication tool. Stories captivate the mind and heart, transcending traditional communication and learning methods. Storytelling touches the essence of our humanity, making it one of the best tools for creating lasting connections. This is timely that we should treat incidents as a positive learning experience and not an experience where corrective actions are directed at people because of what they did or didn’t do at the time. Rather than empowering workers to report, lets support a system and environment of auotomony, so workers feel they can make a Good Call when a risky situation arises and the organization makes a Good Catch by learning and improving to create BetterWork. Winston Churchill’s timeless advice resonates deeply: "The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty." By staying solution-focused, you unlock the inner strength needed to overcome even the toughest challenges. *S = Serve Others Your book is more than a personal accomplishment—it’s a gift to your audience. Write with their needs, hopes, and transformation in mind. As Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." When you focus on serving others, your writing becomes purposeful and powerful. E = Embrace Joy Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. Henri Nouwen reminds us: "Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy every day." Find joy in the creative process—whether it’s crafting a compelling sentence, overcoming writer’s block, or completing a chapter. Generic self-development coaching is hardly comparable to Emotional Intelligence executive coaching for leadership or physician burnout. For executive coaching services procured by organizations like Loudoun County, the payee (coaching firm) typically proposes pricing structures and rates, which the contracting organization negotiates and agrees upon. Specifically, the RFP requires the coaching firm to provide the cost to administer 360 leadership assessments for around 100 leaders. Cost for group assessment interpretation sessions for groups of up to 20 leaders Hourly rate for individual coaching services. The organization will be billed for any other expenses. This indicates that while the coaching firm proposes pricing, the contracting organization has the final say in determining reasonable rates for the required services. The results do not explicitly differentiate between life coaching for personal development and executive/leadership coaching. However, it is sensible to expect pricing structures to differ based on the coaching objectives, target audience, and specific services provided. Organizations would likely negotiate appropriate rates commensurate with the value and complexity of the coaching engagement. In summary, while the payee (coaching firm) can propose pricing, the contracting organization ultimately determines reasonable rates for the coaching services based on their requirements and budget constraints. In contrast, generic coaching for personal development is unlikely to produce the level of income that is typical for niche coaching for leadership, burnout or disruptive behavior.
